Two Memes

Here today with a couple of memes from the lovely bright_lights28. :D Hit me up in the comments if you want to play.

Meme #1
Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Castle:

1. I've been watching since the pilot. I heard about the show before it started airing and the premise seemed intriguing to me and I watched and fell in love with it. Nathan Fillion is amazing and Stana Katic was so surprising to me. I'd never heard of her before Castle, but she's amazingly talented.

2. I'm definitely in it for the long haul. I love the show so I'll watch as long as it's on. I hope that's a long time!

3. Oh god I have so many favorite episodes of Castle. Season 2: "Sucker Punch", and "Tick, Tick, Tick...". Season 3: "Knockdown", "Setup", "Countdown", and "Knockout". Season 4: "Rise", "Cops & Robbers", "Kill Shot", "Linchpin", and of course the finale, "Always". LOL it's too hard to narrow down a favorites list for Castle, because the quality is always so consistent!
4. Well, I'm kind of on the edge of things. I reblog stuff on tumblr and I've made Castle icons, and I love hanging out at the weekly Castle recaps done by my friend bright_lights28, but other than that I'm not really in the thick of it. I'm not really sure why other than that I have a lot of fandoms going on.

5. Yes definitely. I think some people write off the show as just being a romantic will they/won't they show, but they don't realize that the actual stories, the cases are really interesting and quirky and the writing quality on this show is really high.

Harry Potter:

1. Well I was a latecomer I admit. My sister had read the books (she was in high school at the time and I was a junior in college) and she kept bugging me to read them. I tried the first book and I actually couldn't get into it at first. So I put it down and came back to it like six months later and read the first book and I loved it. This was like 2002 I guess, it was before OOTP had come out. I raced through the rest of the books and I just loved them. I loved that they had such a rich background and a fully thought out universe. I started going online to discuss theories with other fans and everything. It was great fun. :)

2. Well I'll always be a HP fan, but obviously with the books and movies over, the fandom has died down somewhat.

3. My favorite books in the series are definitely OOTP and DH. They're all amazing, but I liked those two the best. My fave movie versions are PoA, OOTP, and DH 1 & 2. They did an amazing job with the films, especially the last two.

4. Well I used to when the fandom was more active. I read a lot of fanfic (mainly draco/harry or snarry) and I helped co-run a blog for  adults who read Harry Potter called BloggingHarryPotter.com (sadly now gone).

5. I think as time goes on Harry Potter will never really die. New generations will introduce their kids to these amazing stories so it'll just keep growing. :)

Supernatural:

1. Well back in the summer of 2006, I was reading some TV blog and someone mentioned Supernatural, which had just finished it's first season. I remember they said it was like The X Files meets The Twilight Zone, both of which I love, so I decided to check out the show. And confession: I headed over to The Pirate Bay to download the first season. I was actually a little skeptical because it was on the WB (at that time, it moved to the CW the next year when the WB merged with UPN or whatever), so I kind of thought it was going to be a crappy teen show ala The Gilmore Girls or Dawson's Creek (apologies to people who like that kind of show) just with ghosts. But I started watching and it was AMAZING. I mean it had everything. Two amazing looking leads who could actually act, especially Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester, a great storyline and mythology, humor, scares, great writing, great music (classic rock), and even a really unique look and feel. I got about 6 episodes in and I headed straight to Amazon to buy the season 1 DVDs. From that point on I was a diehard fan.

2. Well again, I will always be a fan, but the show is headed into it's eighth season, so it'll be over within the next couple of years, and fandoms usually die down a bit when that happens. Although with SPN's fanbase you can't really tell. It's such a cult hit, with a very devoted fanbase, so it could keep going for years. I did take a break from the fandom for a year or so just because there are portions of the fandom that can be kind of negative (like "Sam Girls" and "Dean Girls" constantly fighting ugh) but I got back into it recently and I mostly hang out with the tumblr portion of the fandom and I only follow non-wanky people so it's much cooler.

3. Oh favorite episodes. Again I have a list. Season 1: "Dead In The Water", "Home", "Shadow", "Salvation", and "Devil's Trap". Season 2: "In My Time Of Dying", "Everybody Loves a Clown", "Croatoan", "Tall Tales", and "What Is and What Should Never Be". Season 3: "Dream a Little Dream of Me", "Mystery Spot", and "Jus in Bello". Season 4: "Lazarus Rising", "In the Beginning", "On the Head of a Pin", "The Monster at the End of This Book", and "Lucifer Rising". Season 5: "Free to Be You and Me", "The End", "Abandon All Hope", "The Song Remains the Same", "Dark Side of the Moon", and "Swan Song". Season 6: "You Can't Handle the Truth", "Appointment in Samarra", "The French Mistake", and "The Man Who Would Be King". Season 7:  "Meet the New Boss", "Death's Door", "Time After Time", "The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo", and "Reading Is Fundamental". I actually had to pare down this list because it was too damn long. And it's still long. Supernatural really is amazing.

4. Oh yeah. I make tumblr graphics, participate in discussions about it, read fanfiction, etc. My OTP is Dean Winchester/Castiel (an angel who was introduced in season four). Like I said, I do try to avoid the more negative elements of the fandom (Sam and Dean girls fighting, irrational Castiel haters, and ship wars ugh), but it's not that hard.

5. Definitely yes. LOL I've turned so many people onto this show. I got my mother, my sister, and my brother to watch it, and they are all addicted to it. I've also turned a couple of friends into SPN watchers too. Pretty much, if you can convince someone to watch like the first five episodes, they will get hooked. I think the thing with Supernatural is that it has something for everyone. It's a sci-fi/horror show for people who like that, it's a show about two brothers and family and unbreakable bonds of love, for people who like that, and it's got great comedy, for people who like that.

Meme #2
Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

1. What are your three favorite novels? The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. LOL I know, radically different from each other, but they all have their draws. I love the symbolism in Gatsby, the wit and satire in P&P, and the post-modern disorder of Slaughterhouse.

2. What was the most interesting class you took in college? Definitely my Intro to Cultural Anthropology course. It was a general course, but there's just a lot of interesting stuff about cultural anthropology. I loved learning to look at another culture without placing value judgments on it. I think that actually made me a less judgmental person really. It was also really fun to look at some of the stuff in our own culture from a different perspective. I remember one of the experiments we did for that course was about unwritten rules of society, so we had to do this ridiculous stuff like ride on an elevator with a bunch of unwitting people and stand facing them, instead of turning around like most people do on an elevator. LOL. It was great.

3. If you could only watch one TV show for the rest of your life, which would it be? LOL, see Supernatural above. Now that it's been renewed for an eighth season and the president of The CW said it probably wouldn't be the final season, people are already making "Season 35: Where Dean and Sam fight off ghosts in their retirement home" jokes. :P

4. Where is your dream vacation destination? Well, the place I most love to go on vacation is in The Adirondack mountains in my home state of NY. My family has been going there for generations (since the late 1800's) and we own several camps and lodges. It's just so peaceful and beautiful there. My dream destination that I've never been too is the U.K. I'd love to travel all around England and Wales and Scotland. It's where most of my ancestors are from, and I love the history of the British Isles.

5. What are your three favorite scents? Baby powder, coconut, and lemon/citrus scents. I'm a perfume/body spray/scented candle junkie, so I know my scents lol.

6. Who is your favorite female character currently on television? Probably Temperance Brennan on Bones. She reminds me the most of myself and I relate to her a lot. She's kind of weird and nerdy and also can be a little emotionally distant which is kind of a coping/defense mechanism and that's pretty much me in a nutshell.

7. If you had to choose the menu for your last meal, what would it be? Oh dear. I think I'd go for homemmade Mac & Cheese, deep fried coconut shrimp, ice cold fresh squeezed lemonade, and my mom's chocolate mayonnaise cake with peanut butter frosting for dessert. I mean it's my last meal so I might as well just pig out right?
