I can understand the horror and shock of the Charlie Hebdo massacre. My own take is that while the magazine in question is crappy, merely horsewhipping the editors would have been quite sufficient to get the point across. Allowing this fine old custom to fall into desuetude is, as far as I am concerned, a source of a lot of the evil in this world, particularly the excesses of the tabloids.
That said...I wonder, would there be this huge outpouring of showy sympathy if the jihadis had shot up the offices of the Fronte Nationale? Or had come to the US and shot up the Westboro Baptist Church? Somehow, I "hae me doots" that people would be working up this level of outrage.
