Middle-earth, the fact that Tolkien was like "Fuck you Shakespeare, my trees can actually walk", poems that make me bawl ("I sit beside the fire and think," "The road goes ever on," "Still round the corner there may wait," "In Western lands beneath the sun"), burning nostalgia for a place I've never been, friends who feel the same.

Well, my slightly random and lame fandom secret anyway... Finding out about Balin's death affected me as much if not more than Boromir's death in Fellowship. I read The Hobbit first and I loved Balin so much, it was like losing a friend. On the same token, Bilbo leaving with the Elves at the end broke my heart more than Frodo leaving did.
