It was common for people to make New Year’s resolutions; whether it was to find a new purpose in life, their one true love, it was always about achieving something. That night, a few minutes before midnight, Su Li and her Ravenclaw dormmates sat in their dormitory, exchanging random jokes and eating off Su’s mother’s cookies. In just a couple of minutes, something new would happen. Or maybe absolutely nothing would happen. Su wasn’t sure. But never mind, she was going to keep eating the cookies instead of worrying about those sort of things, because the cookies were good and deserved to be eaten. “What are your New Year’s resolutions, Su?” asked her friend Mandy, with a curious expression on her face.
“Oh, I have a lot,” Su began, but was interrupted by Padma almost immediately.
“Learn how to be tidier?”
“Yes and - ”
“Finally organize your things?” Lisa added teasingly.
Su looked slightly hesitant. “We’ll see.” Her reply, of course, caused Lisa to look quite dissatisfied since she was very INVOLVED - in organizing her things (for God knows what reason). Anyway, organization did not match well with Su. Not at all. In fact, the last time she tried to colour-code her homework, she ended up doing the wrong assignments and had to be in detention with Filch. And… that wasn’t fun at all. She had been determined not to organize her things since then. Being spontaneous was more enjoyable.
“Are you planning to give up on drinking coffee, then?” Mandy questioned her.
“NO,” Su exclaimed, quite shocked at the mere thought of quitting the sacred caffeine drink. “Actually…”
“She’s going to make a new type of coffee next, I reckon,” Padma theorized.
When were they going to let her talk? Woe.
“Oh, my,” Lisa gasped. “We wouldn’t want her to do that. Remember when she tried to make her coffee taste like strawberry and forced you to drink it, Padma?”
“Yes,” Padma said solemnly, while making a face. “Don’t remind me of it.”
Su sighed. When was she ever going to tell them what her real resolutions were? This was impossible. She bit into a cookie and munched them loudly while her friends started talking about her everlasting habits. That was it. No one loved her! No one was going to give her love for the New Year’s. Perhaps she would have to scrap her resolutions.
“So, really,” said Mandy, apparently breathless from all the talking. “What are your resolutions, Li?”
“I have them written down…” She dug into the pockets of her pyjamas to check, but realized that there was nothing in it. Groaning, she turned and bent down, looking under the beds for the piece of parchment, while the rest of her friends looked at each other knowingly.
“Su…” Padma said. “It’s OK.”
“No it’s not,” Su replied, looking upset. “I lost my resolutions!”
“But you still remember them, right?” Lisa asked. “Or did you make a copy of it?”
She gave Lisa an incredulous look. “How can I remember fifty resolutions all at once? And making a copy of it would be just silly.”
“It’s always good to have copies of something,” Lisa protested.
“Not always…”
“HAPPY NEW YEAR!” Padma and Mandy shouted together, pointing to their watches while hitting Lisa and Su with pillows.
“This is WAR!” Su declared, picking up a pillow as well and hitting Padma with it.
While the girls were busy, a crumpled piece of parchment with the name ‘Su Li’ was neatly placed on one of the shelves by Luna Lovegood, who slipped away as quietly as she came in.
