Sarah sighed, staring at the mirror in the dorm room. She was alone and in her bikini from last summer, and she felt awful. She'd been trying to exercise and eat healthier recently so she'd look better in her bathing suit, so she decided to try it on again to see if it had made any difference. She did look a little more toned, but she was still pale as a snowflake.
Sarah stared at herself sadly, and the mirror stared forlornly back. It just wasn't fair. She was fixing one part of herself that she didn't like, and now all she could think about was the rest of her that she didn't like. She was too pale. Her legs weren’t long enough. She still wasn’t skinny enough. And, worst of all: her chest was practically falling out of the tiny bikini top. Most girls would’ve been happy to be so well endowed, but Sarah hated her big chest. It attracted too much of the wrong kind of attention, and she felt horribly embarrassed whenever she saw anyone staring at it in her bathing suit. During third year she had been upset with the fact that she was completely flat, but she had never wanted to grow this much.
Sarah sighed again. She’d never be happy with herself…there was always something she’d want to change, and she had never been able to accept her body the way it was. Sarah tried crossing her arms over her chest, but decided it was stupid; she couldn’t spend all her time at the pool and at the beach with her arms crossed. There was nothing she could do about it, and the fact that she couldn’t change herself was horribly discouraging…it made her feel like a failure.
She could always work on her tan, Sarah thought. She couldn’t change the size of her chest, but she could work on her fair skin. Maybe a tan would make her feel better about herself. Sarah’s mind completely left her other problem and focused on this new thought. So what if she always either burned or just got more freckles? Surely there was a spell somewhere that could help her tan.
Sarah pulled her hair up into a high but messy bun, and slid on a pair of sunglasses. She grabbed a blanket and a book she’d been reading and head for the grounds, still in her bathing suit. Once she arrived there, she laid out her blanket and laid down on her stomach, flipping open her book to a dog-eared page.
