ode to barn chores, nighttime

Oct 26, 2004 19:18

outside the jeep, which smells of cow, dust, dog, and the apple lost somewhere under the seat, sour cidery cow-dog smell,
the air is softly warm and smells of soil, horse, and crisp brown leaves, hay, molasses, and wood shavings.
outside the jeep with the loud radio, playing 'marketplace', taking a look at the numbers,
there is a silence broken only by hoofbeats, the colt's whicker, hoof silvery noise against corral panel.
i stop and smell the air, soft fall air, falling softly through the air toward the barn
where i stop to watch a vee of geese switching up, front to back and back to front
kronk, kronk, geese flying low, looking for a place to rest the night, then on to the south tomorrow at first light.

poetry, db tag, public
