Linguistics (and the Amazon Kindle)

At my college, we take one class at a time for a period of about a month each. Right now I'm in a linguistics class called Language and Speech in American Society. I almost didn't take the course, but now I'm really glad I did. I feel like it's the perfect compliment to my English major, which normally focuses on literature. are you talking about putting the word "the" before BBC? I'm not sure what you mean by that part - i am quite thick though, i don't understand linguistical language!

No worries--I probably didn't do a very good job of explaining. Basically, what I'm wondering is this: Do you really say "the bbc ARE doing___" instead of "the bbc IS doing___"? My textbook says that you always use "are" with corporations.

My "Cassell's Guide to Written English" uses Oxfam as an example for subject-verb agreement and uses the singular. A quick scan of the BBC website seems to confirm that they use 'the BBC is...' etc. How confusing!!!
