A question for my writer friends...

Sep 24, 2008 19:49

If you share my interest in writing (and so many of you do!), I have a question for you. How do you manage to find the time for your writing? Is writing your full-time job? Gosh, I can only wish that writing was my job. As it is, my student and work obligations keep me busy all day. I can't seem to find the space to write on a sustained basis. I'm ( Read more... )

A lot of things suffer. Like having a social life, a romantic life, or engaging in leisure activities (TV, movies, video games).

So in other words, every part of life that could potentially be enjoyable. That's depressing but probably true!

It's all about priorities. ;-)

This is true, this is true! I'm sending homework to the bottom of my priorities list right now. : )

Yay, creative writing! Although, I always found I had the hardest time writing when I HAD to for an assignment. I hope you're not like that!

My husband had an independent study sort of project, and he used his NaNoWriMo novel for it. Hee hee.

As for me, I have plenty of time, I just don't use it for writing. :P

Well...towards the end of a creative writing class, writing will start to feel like a chore!! At my school, we take one class at a time for three and a half weeks. But most of the time, writing doesn't really seem like work to me. I make sure to tell myself that I'm doing it for me and any potential readers.

Oh, cool--I was thinking about doing NaNoWriMo. Did your husband have fun with it?

Yeah, sometimes my free time gets channelled towards lots of other non-writing activities. Oh well...

During the school year, I have a good deal of time while my son is in school. But when he's not in school, it's a lot harder. I have to make time for it at night or find spare moments here and there during the day when I can jot stuff down in my notebook. But generally, I've found that I have to just say I'm going to write and do it, no matter what gets jettisoned from my schedule. Most often it's my house that suffers.

Hey, you've gotta do what you've gotta do. I want to have kids and often wonder what my writing life will be like when the day comes. Getting a puppy gave me a little taste of the future in that regard. : ) I couldn't write two sentences without having to do something dog-related. But it's cool that you get to write during the school year!!

I feel the exact same way. I barely have time to write anymore, or at least as much as I would like to (which is more than once a week, that would be nice). I just have to make time to do it, even if something else suffers (namely my chores, I have to do the schoolwork, even if it takes me longer to do it).

I like what you're doing with your major though. I didn't know that you could do that. I'm getting a creative writing certificate along with my degree, so it's kind of similar. I have to take certain classes to fullful that certificate requirements. And I have a Norton Anthology book! Actually three, but they're on the middle ages and things like that.

By the way, I love the icon! :)

Thanks! It's me and my little sister, Gwen. We did a special effect to make it look like we were in a painting. I love taking pictures like that.

That's cool that you're getting a creative writing certificate! : ) Are you going to take any creative writing classes this school year? Man, you gotta love those Norton anthologies. (Especially since they're so expensive.) The literary theory one has a cool painting of a waterfall on the cover. Words are behind the waterfall mist.

Are you thinking you'll major in English? English majors unite. : )

Well, it looks awesome. I'm taking a creative writing class next semester, and then I'll add more classes required for the certificate each semester. Re. Norton anthologies, absolutely. They are way cool and way better than any English textbook I've ever had. That sounds like a cool cover. :)

I'm majoring in Secondary Education, based in English, so I'm taking all English classes regardless starting next year.

Those Norton anthologies are pretty sweet, aren't they? I'm such a dork, but I like certain kinds of textbooks. I have a lot of other nerdy things that I like. For example, looking things up in the Oxford English Dictionary...Well, let's just not go there. : )

Secondary education sounds really cool, and if I could do it over again, I would give that serious consideration. Are you thinking middle or high school (or is it way too early to tell)?
