He did not lie. In a perfect world he would protect you in every way possible. Unfortunately this is far from a perfect world and there are things that prevent him from doing what he wants, which is protecting the people he cares about.

Lying implies that he did not mean what he told you, and I know he would mean every word of that promise. But forces larger than ourselves often keep us from what we promise to do.
