PRESS RELEASE

U.S. NAVY VESSEL MAKES PORT CALL IN MASSAWA

The USS Juneau, a Transport Dock Ship, is visiting the Port of Massawa, Eritrea, from February 17-19, 2005, while deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. The Juneau is only the second U.S. Navy ship to make a port visit in Eritrea since 1997. (The first was the USS Hopper in October 2004, also in Massawa.)

The Juneau crew will host a luncheon aboard ship on February 18, and provide a ship tour for Eritrean Government officials, U.S. Ambassador to Eritrea Scott DeLisi, and various members of the diplomatic community.

Juneau sailors will also participate in public service projects while in Massawa. Approximately 30 sailors have volunteered to plant about 500 mangrove trees along the coast of the Red Sea, as part of the Sea Water Forest Initiative Project sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development. The Juneau crew will conclude the day with a friendly soccer match against members of the Eritrean Defense Forces, and will later host a "Family Reunion" at Massawa Port, which will include entertainment provided by a musical band composed of USS Juneau sailors.

Nicknamed "Mighty J", the USS Juneau is homeported in Sasebo, Japan and is currently operating in the Red Sea area in support of the global war on terrorism. Its visit to Eritrea comes in the context of the ongoing cooperation between the United States and the Eritrean Defense Forces. More detailed information about the Juneau, including photographs, is available on the ship’s Website: http://www.juneau.navy.mil.

For further information please contact GeorgeW. Colvin Jr., Ph. D., Public Affairs Officer at the United States Embassy, at 12-07-38.
