Hi. Poor Livejournal is becoming sort of obsolete. It certainly still has it's place over other social networking sites in that it's main focus is in what we can write and express through writing. So it's unique. It's just that it takes a lot more effort that other means of staying in touch.
When my life gets busy and I feel like I don't have any free time (like recently) it is the first to go. I'm sorry Livejournal! That's just the way it is!
It's okay, because I only know a very few people who consistently read or post here. I've been going back through and trying to tag my old posts, and I've gotten through the first horribly depressing year.
I've noticed a few trends though in going back:
1) Typos and spelling errors have gradually become less frequent.
2) Structure and focus of posts have matured.
3) Posts have in general become less frequent (with a few particularly prolific periods of exception).
4) Comments on posts have definitely decreased, with a sharp drop off starting a year or two ago when Facebook really took off.
5) I have gradually and definitely become more private. This is probably a good thing. Each and every self conscious thought I have does not need to be given voice, particularly here.
6) Another way of looking at this is that each post has become more meaningful, but perhaps less contemplative, usually involving a goal of expressing a particular something.
7) The tone of my posts have become consistently easier and more pleasant to read (in my opinion).
So, if you look at all that, despite the content becoming more refined and pleasant, my apparent readership has decreased. This could mean I was more interesting when I angstily complained about everything and voiced confusing thought streams with some regularity. It could also mean that I simply lost readership when I failed to update for months at a time. It is almost certainly related to the general decline in Livejournal usage.
But anyway, I link to this journal on my Facebook profile so it is here for anyone to read. I have very few (maybe one or two) private posts, so it can be viewed by anyone. This is potentially a good way for people to learn about me (though if they read old posts they will get a false impression of who I am now). Over all, though, this journal probably serves a beneficial purpose?
I like to think so. Sometimes I just want to type things out, to no one in particular, but I don't feel like I'm actually expressing myself unless there's at least a chance someone could read it. That is the benefit of Livejournal over a private journal.
