We're getting down to the last hours in the B movie monster of a forum thread. In the spirit that summarizes the "veneer of civilization" that permeated the thread we had a fan fiction author shredded to bits for having the sheer audacity of hoping to publish in book form what is already published on the net. Hoping to gain the support of those who spent over a year ripping apart one who dared publish a reference guide, the fan fic author threw the reference guide author under the bus to no avail. In a moment of sanity the fan fic author realized that there was no winning with people who just want to hate ( ... )

At the same time fandom websites are losing member participation, the short companion book of fairy tales sells out in 1 week and probably for the first time in history a book of three fairy tales is No 1 on the best seller's list.

I admit, I was wrong. There remain a lot of Harry Potter fans in this world who are dying to read anything relating to Harry Potter.

This group of people are just waiting to be stolen. It is worth the risk of being sued. I think it is time for some agressive writer and publisher to take a shot at this group of readers with a fiction series of a different set of witches and wizard that credits the events and characters of the Harry Potter series as having actually occurred, but isn't a sequeal of the events and characters of the Harry Potter series. It would probably be safest to even change countries of the series.

I am waiting to be stolen. A refreshing idea is something new. Twilight has been a very successful series, not in the same ball park as the HP series but a fun read for the escapist. Would love to stumble over a new set of books that can create the rabid enthusiasm that HP has but not built on HP. I have been knocking off a lot of books the last few years (have stooped to listening to audiobooks on my Ipod to hide the constant reading), lots of them very good, but nothing that has touched me like these books. One great thing about fan sites is the comparisons of HP to other books that I've not read encourages me to give them a go.

I'm not so sure fandom is getting smaller, maybe it is in transition as this series is complete.

I'm not sure it could quite compete with the rabid enthusiasm of HP, but The Dresden Files are good fun. And there are 10 of them, so plenty of canon to work with.

I have gotten my hands on The Dresden Files on audio and James Marsters (Spike-Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is Dresden!!!!

While I won't say this out loud in the company of adults I don't plan on "leaving" because I like the interaction with people that like the same books.

But there are places in the world where "nice" really means "nice," and not the "thin veneer of sneer" or whatever. *lol*

It's so fitting that DavidEnglish, bless him, came up with the best line of the day that the thread barely kept a "veneer" of a civilized tone, and only because the Mods were there watching* continuously.

*Except when they looked the other way... or participated.

The only question is:

Will it end with a Guffaw or a Whimper?

Or will they drag some people off the thread with splinters under their fingernails as they try to hang on? :)
