There's a college basketball game tonight, between the Home Team (Iowa Hawkeyes) and Wisconsin. We did $1800 last night, which is kinda high for a freezing-cold Saturday (wind chill of 25 below), because a bunch of Wisconsinites drove down here for the weekend to drink and go to the game. It's nice that people are paying attention to a sport other than football, but I'd just as soon not have to cater to their alcohol needs, given the choice. However, that choice isn't mine to make. At least I was working with someone last night.
Tonight, however, being a Sunday, I'm by myself again. Usually, Sundays are nice slow days where you do a max of $1100 on second shift. Lately, though, there have been a string of Sundays that have given people an excuse to run out and buy as much beer as they can get their paws on. Two weeks ago, the students had just gotten back from Christmas break, and Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so nobody had to go to school until Tuesday. In the eyes of college students all over town, this meant "WOOHOO! Another day to spend this school money we got from Mom and Dad for Christmas on beer!" I did about $1600. Last week was the big pre-Super Bowl playoff game between the Bears and...someone. I don't remember who. I don't follow football. But since it was the Big Playoff Game, and since a large portion of our local college students came here from Illinois, there was once again a lot of drinking going on. I did about $1500. I keep looking forward to "next Sunday" being a quiet one, but if there's a basketball game of enough prominence to bring a hundred or so Wisconsonites into town, then this Sunday is probably going to be a repeat of last Sunday. And then there's next Sunday, which is Super Bowl Sunday. Bossman has been trying to find a way to get me double coverage for that evening, since it's bound to be another busy one, but we have two people who've asked for the night off to watch the game, one who's going to be working at her other job (at a bar...not a big surprise they'd need her that night!), and the only other person we have who could work, we'd rather not ask to come in, because she never gets any days off between Kum & Go and her other job, and we like to give her the chance to get just one day off every once in a while...so why not on Super Bowl Sunday? So I'll probably be by myself yet again.
Pooey.
Anyway....we picked up the fabric for my wedding dress on Friday, and I shipped it off to Oma yesterday. YAY!! We didn't find any fabric suitable for the tie/bow/belt/sash thingie, but Gabe (probably correctly) figured that it'd be easier for Oma to find the right kind of fabric herself, once she has the dress fabric in front of her. I trust her judgement, so I'm not worried. I also just managed to ship off the finished paintings for Seith & Laura's baby's room. It's a good thing I left early, because I'd forgotten that the downtown satellite postal station closed at 2pm on Saturdays. I got there at 15 after, looked at the sign, and thought, "Awww shit." Luckily, the main Post Office in Iowa City was only 4 1/2 blocks away, and they don't close until 3 on Saturdays, so I hightailed it over there and got the package sent out, and still managed to get to work in time! Yaaaaay!
I got the new iPod up and running, which brightened my day considerably. Having good music to jog to is something I'd sorely missed over the last four months! With DJ Sonar and a collection of Bhangra to bolster me, I actually jogged for a full 31 minutes yesterday before realizing I'd probably better start cooling down before I overexerted myself. But boy did it feel good! *pets iPod* You're my friend, little buddy.
Random note: I had a dream last night that I met
Vin Diesel. It was probably one of the more exciting dreams I've ever had in my life. I was on a train with several of my friends, and we heard that Vin Diesel was up in a front car (apparently a VIP car). Someone managed to convince him to come back through the train, telling him that there were people who really wanted to meet him. When he got to our car, I was so scared and excited that I ducked down behind the seats in the back. I heard his voice (a very easy one to recognize) asking who else here had wanted to meet him...apparently one of my friends had caught his attention and told him about me. He looked behind the seats where I was crouched just as I turned around to shoo my friends (who were pointing at me) away, and he smiled, crouched down next to me, and handed me a piece of paper with his name, address, and autograph. He pointed to the address and said "This is where you can get ahold of me if you need help," and then stood back up, smiled around at everyone, and said, "So, how's everyone doing?" During a chorus of responses, he looked back over at me, pointed, and said, "We need to talk later, okay?" And then he left.
*sighs*
I've been meaning to do the fan-girl thing and send him a letter about the D&D world I've been building for a long time. Maybe this is telling me I need to get around to sending it. I dunno. But wow, was that exciting!
Okay. library's kicking me off the puter. Toodles!
