Hello world (and by that I mean portion of the earth's crust that is composed of lovely friends who I don't keep in touch with nearly as well as I should),
An update: I have an Americorps position working as a Hurricane Ike Case Manager. I thought things couldn't get that much more stressful than trying to balance love life concerns, finals, and club duties back in college. Wrong. The RL (short for the ironically used phrase Real Life) is kind of getting me down.
Now, instead of worrying about whether I will pass classes I have to be concerned about whether or not I will be able to get a client into housing before they end up homeless and continually have to tell people, "Sorry but we have limited funds and are unable to offer financial assistance at this time" after they explain that they are widowed, have a 14 year old son and have not been employed since last may. I must judge everyone by the criteria of ability to attain self sufficiency. I'm not really the judging type.
I suppose moral of the story is I'm glad I didn't go to grad school for social work. My next job, I plan on being a waitress or stocking shelves at a grocery store. I can't handle the stress of knowing that my (in)ability to manage my cases is directly lowering or raising someone's quality of life.
But really, these are all just Complaints. Overall, I shouldn't be spending so much time quejando de mi vida. Really, there are quite a lot of good things:
*My housemates (hello Karen and Alison) are quite fabulous company.
*There is a mysterious tree house resident who lives behind my house and occasionally steals my hammock and compost cover.
*I no longer have a car and use bike for major transport.
*Remember Daniel Kidney? That prospective student who biked from Argentina to New York? We are now in a somewhat serious yet wonderful relationship and will be biking across a portion of the U.S. together this summer.
*I should be moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado this August [and will no longer be in a long distance relationship, but a real live close human type partnership]. I will also be a mere 6 miles from Garden of the Gods.
*I have befriended my Americorps coworkers and they are quite wonderful humans.
Good luck with all the wonderful things you are doing and let me know if you want me to bike to your house this summer.
Viva la Paz!
