I went on a major nerd rant today on Twitter. New iPhone came out today, and AT&T decided to not allow iPhone 3G owners to upgrade for the $199/$299 price. So nerds freaked out. This pissed me off, because with any other phone on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile, if you want to get it when you aren't eligible for an upgrade, it will cost you more. But God forbid iPhone users, who have perfectly working phones and just want the newest and bestest tech ever, have to pay like everyone else. I mean... REALLY. And then to get all up in a huff about it, crying foul? Wimps.
To the uneducated, this decision on AT&T's part might seem to contradict their stance with the release of the 3G. In that case, if you got the original iPhone, but wanted to get the 3G with access to the full AT&T network, AT&T allowed you to basically rip up your old contract, get the new iPhone and get a new 2-year one. This was actually very fair, early adopters got screwed over with pricing and capabilities the first time around. I believe Apple actually dropped the price a few months later, leaving really early adopters very pissed. But this made everyone happy, because the iPhone should have been 3G in the first place.
But this time is much different. For starters, the iPhone 3G took off. AT&T got a ton of new subscribers (including myself) and a lot of people paid for data plans for the first time (including myself). If AT&T were to honor their original agreement with everyone who got the 3G, they would just hemorrhage money. No way they could afford to subsidize that many phones for people who, for all intensive purposes, weren't eligible for the upgrade. Not to mention that, besides the better camera, compass, and video, there's not that much difference between the 3G and 3GS. Sure it runs faster, but let's all remember, the iPhone is a phone (even though I use it mostly for other things). I do not expect it to run super fast (though I wouldn't mind if it did). Shouldn't the 3G people be happy that they get iPhone OS 3.0? I sure am! Push notifications baby! I wasn't planning on ditching my fabulous iPhone anytime soon. I mean, it broke recently and Apple just replaced the thing in full. That's service, so I pretty much have a new phone a year into my AT&T service agreement.
I got off track. Right, I have no idea why iPhone users think they are totally different. I don't even know why 3G users are so bitchy about not being able to get that "S" upgrade. Just wait a fucking year, seriously. It's not like your phone has some major defects or is seriously lesser to the new one. They will still offer the 3G! Shouldn't that say "good enough for now"? HONESTLY, sometimes people are ridiculous.
That's all I'm going to defend AT&T for: no MMS at OS 3.0 launch? "Later this summer" sure doesn't sound promising. I'm anticipating it's going to be like "Push Notifications in October" for OS 2.0
