Underwhelmed?

I have no idea what is wrong with me this year, but reading the Golden Globe Award Nominations this afternoon (I waited until afternoon!), I was completely underwhelmed by both the film and television offerings. The only pleasant surprise was Tom Cruise and Robert Downey, Jr. for Tropic Thunder. Everything else seemed to be culled from the typical Oscar bait movies I've seen in commercials. I now want to see a few of those movies, but mostly because I feel I ought to, not because I'm intrigued. I remember being so excited for Juno last year, and No Country for Old Men. And there were some pictures I didn't get around to seeing, like There Will Be Blood and Michael Clayton. And I've been into Oscar picks in the past, like Pan's Labyrinth and The Departed and Sideways. But this year I'm just not into really any films. I just see them as shameless attempts at winning awards, except for Slumdog Millionaire, which I believe was a pretty small picture (starring a kid for Skins!)

And for the TV shows, well absolutely zero shockers. Mad Men, Dexter, House... The last one I would switch up with Lost any day. I hate that the show seems to be award taboo now. Too bad it's been one of the most stellar show on TV, up there with Mad Men and Dexter I would argue. House was not so amazing last year, it seemed that the cast shake-up was unsuccessful, with two of the three ducklings getting shoved off into nowheresville. Sure there was a really amazing finale, but other than that... Eh. True Blood got nominated, which I guess is nice... A surprising new comer, but not really that shocking since it had a lot of buzz.

Le sigh, I'm so disappointed at these names. Normally there's like one person that is a total shock and great surprise, but nothing. Not a peep from Pushing Daisies, nothing from the big blockbusters (Heath Ledger doesn't count). I was hoping to see Robert Downey, Jr. get recognition for Iron Man, because he's just as deserving for that.

lost, award shows, the dark knight, pan's labyrinth, golden globe awards, pushing daisies, mad men, true blood, movies
