Nerds Playing Poker

Apr 22, 2006 01:10

Lessons learned:
Only UNIX nerds would try making the blinds be the Fibonacci series.
Only UNIX nerds would be so bad at Excel that they'd fuck up the columns.
Only drunk UNIX nerds would detect this well into the night, and then argue for 20 minutes about what the blinds should be.

The Indian guy who's never played before probably hasn't learned the art of the bluff. When he's calling everything, it's for a reason.
Someone calling into blinds without looking at his cards annoys me.
Someone calling into the turn without looking at his cards really annoys me.
The people who talk all week about how they'll bust you? Easily whittled down, and very shaken when you get a good beat on them.
For a group of people who are logic/rules-driven... surprisingly little knowledge on the game rules.

I have better table awareness/etiquette than most nerds.
I'm about the only person who will fold a crap hand preflop.
I will chase mediocre hands longer than I should.
I handle bad beats well[1].
I can be a lucky bastard[2].
I do not bet strongly enough, and don't go all-in to muscle people around.
I am susceptible to being pushed around.

But for all that, I still took 2nd place. :) Busted 3 people, took a big hit missing a straight draw in heads-up, and finally got whittled down and killed.

$20 buyin for 11 people, 20% of the pool = $44 payout.
