The campus is still, its features softened by the absence of people. In the distance I can see the library. Eight floors of sprawling white concrete that sticks out like a blurry finger in an otherwise beautiful photograph. It's like the photographer's finger slipped into the viewfinder just as the shutter opened and closed. I stand under the overhang of the dormitory watching the mist fall from the sky. I inhale smoke from my cigarette and let it seep into my chest. Ashley walks by and gives me a smile. I answer the gesture with a feeble 'hello' and attempt to paint a convincing smile on my face. She seems satisfied with it, and shuffles down the steps towards her dorm. My head is still fuzzy from last night's events, and my body keeps telling me to sit down. I deny the suggestion and peer towards the Cafeteria. My stomache rumbles in agreement but I ignore it.
I'm writing a short story for no reason at all.
