New sanctions imposed by European Union (EU) have introduced restrictions on trade in and out of Crimean ports.
The EU has banned the import of all goods that originate in Crimea.

The rule applies to any vessel, entity or body, operating under the jurisdiction of an EU country.
"It will therefore include all ship managers based in the EU maritime hubs regardless of the flag of the vessel and the country of registration," said maritime law firm Ince & Co.

Providing insurance cover for voyages carrying cargo loaded in a Crimean port is also prohibited under the rule.
There are a few exceptions to the sanctions, which will run until September 26.

Ukraine has declared the Crimea ports of Kerch, Feodosia, Sevastopol, Yalta and Yevpatorya as closed, meaning that entry into those ports is illegal under Ukrainian law.

"It is likely that a vessel calling at one of the closed Crimean Ports will expose the vessel to the risk of arrest in Ukraine at some time in the future.

"In addition, a vessel calling in Ukraine with the stated intention of going to a Crimean Port may also find itself detained," according to Ince.
Russia annexed Crimea earlier this year.
