Character name: Yuki Sohma
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Timeline: Chapter 89 -- manga
Age: 16
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: This isn't really a strength or ability -- more like a curse. But Yuki is possessed by the Chinese zodiac spirit of the rat. Whenever he's hugged by the opposite sex, he will turn into said animal spirit. The transformation also happens if he's sick/weak. As a result, he can communicate with rodents and other rats tend to be drawn to him -- even while he is in human form.
How would they use their abilities?: Accidentally? Haha.
Appearance: Yuki has been deemed a 'Prince Charming' with his handsome yet feminine features. He's pale-skinned, has light violet-gray hair, and matching eyes. His overall frame is lean and lanky, but there is an underlying strength behind him.
Background/Personality:
There's a story -- a story of the Chinese zodiac and all their animal representations. A story of a banquet with God to which all the animals were invited. A story in which the rat tricked the cat into missing the feast by telling him that it was the following day. And then the smug rat rode on the back of the ox to be the first to arrive before godt. This is the story. But the reality is a curse for the Sohma family.
Yuki Sohma was born as the representation of the rat in the Chinese zodiac. Special members of the Sohma family were also born as these animal spirits -- including the cat. And they each answer to the head of the family -- Akito Sohma who is the personification of God. They absolutely cannot go against "his" wishes (Akito is really a female unbeknownst to the majority of the family). But what does this curse mean? Well, they cannot be hugged by the opposite gender otherwise they will turn into their respective animals. (The only exception to this rule is when two animals of the zodiac are opposite genders and hug each other -- then they won't transform),
Because Yuki was born as the rat, he was held in a much higher regard by the majority of the family. This high regard came at a price, however. Not only was there a lot of unjustified hatin' going on in relation to his animal spirit (by both the ox -- Hatsuharu -- and the cat -- Kyo -- who felt used/humiliated by what the rat had done to them in the stories), but Yuki was pretty much sold to the head of the family -- Akito -- who emotionally abused him and locked him in the dark for prolonged periods of time. Yuki's self-esteem was pretty much crushed. His immediate family didn't care as long as they were getting compensated for Yuki's existence, his brother Ayame was indifferent, and the friends he made in school? Well after an incident where a girl bumped into him and triggered his rat form -- they all had to have their memories erased, making them forget he even existed. Akito played on this often, expressing that no one cared about Yuki, that he was worthless, and he should feel lucky that Akito even bothered to pay attention to him. Eventually Yuki started to give up on life.
Yuki was born with a lung condition, often going into coughing fits, having difficulty with breathing, and getting sick quite often. With all of the added stress brought about by Akito, it was easy for Yuki to succumb to illness -- lacking the care to fight for his life. That was, until he just suddenly ran away and found a girl who was lost and crying. Without a word, he helped her find her way back to her mother. This was the first time someone needed him, and in many ways...it gave him the desire to fight on. Little did he know that he would meet her again and she would pick up right where she left off with giving his life meaning.
Fast-forward to the more recent past, Yuki chose to live with his cousin Shigure -- the dog of the zodiac. He didn't escape from the Sohma's entirely, but it was, at least, a house away from the main estate -- a place away from Akito. Instead of attending the all-boy's school most of his family went to, Yuki opted to go to a co-ed one...his reasoning was that it helped him to get out of the Sohma's reach, just a little bit. He gained an instant popularity for his girly-good looks...and many admirers (even boys). But Yuki never allowed himself to get too close, wedging a forced distance between himself on the other students. In part, this was because he didn't want them to find out about his secret, but mostly it was because no matter how hard he tried, Yuki just couldn't escape the Sohma curse. Then, something unexpected happened...
Honda Tohru came into his life.
It was an accident, really, how he stumbled across Tohru who said she was living nearby and walking to school (something that was bizarre because the Sohma's owned that entire property). Come to find out, she was living in a tent in the woods after her mother died and while she was waiting for her grandfather's house to be remodeled. Long story short, Tohru came to stay with the Sohma family. But when Kyo (the self-proclaimed rival of Yuki) came searching for a fight, Tohru raced forward to stop him and subsequently caused him to turn into a cat. They were forced to explain their secret to her.
Yuki became concerned that Tohru would have her memories erased much like the children when he was younger. To his surprise, when he expressed his concern to Tohru -- she asked him to be her friend again even if her memories were erased.
Time passed. Shoujo manga stuff happened. Tohru was introduced to more of Yuki's family. And the relationship between Kyo, Tohru, and Yuki played itself out like a romantic comedy. Yuki was continually suspicious about Akito's reasons for allowing Tohru to stay with them, and he wasn't trusting of Shigure either when it came down to it. He believed that they were using Tohru in some way, but couldn't exactly figure this out. His brother Ayame came around from time to time to annoy him, because after all those years of treating him like he didn't exist, he decided that he wanted to come back into Yuki's life as enthusiastically (and annoyingly) as possible.
Eventually, Yuki was nominated student council president -- a position he didn't necessarily want to take -- more out of fear of what the student body would think if they got to know the real him. But after Kisa (the tiger of the zodiac) ran away from home due to incessant teasing by her classmates and came to stay with them for a little while -- and after she stopped speaking because she was afraid of being made fun of, Yuki found a parallel between them. It was through Kisa's reluctant willingness to face her fears and go back to school that Yuki found the strength to accept the nomination for student council president.
It was there that he met the other members who (with their enthusiastic and crazy personalities) had a role in really humanizing him. Kakeru Manabe (his annoying vice president) came to be the one person Yuki confessed to about how he loved Tohru like he would a mother. Through the time he spent with Tohru, and through the realization that she saved him in so many ways, Yuki realized that he was searching out that familial bond he never had. To be wanted, needed, accepted, and loved by someone -- it never occurred to him that Tohru was a female classmate. Part of him even tried to look at her like a woman he might be interested in, but he admittedly felt awkward about it. And eventually, his feelings began to shift in the direction of Kuragi Machi, another member of the student council.
As far as Yuki's personality goes...distant would be the best way to describe him. He doesn't allow people to get too close to him out of fear that he'll be hurt. He's been referred to as the 'ice prince' -- so beautiful but so cold, even though he hides behind a layer of kindness and superficial smiles. In reality, though, all he wants is someone to care about him...which is what he gets when Tohru enters his life. Her warmth touches and warms him, and for the first time, he's able to smile real smiles and feel genuine happiness. He knows what it's like to have a real friend and not have to hide his selfish nature.
Yuki is insecure. He feels that no one really cares about him and that to everyone else, he's boring. Although he's held up on a high pedestal in his family for representing the rat of the zodiac, he only wants to escape from them and live a normal life. He hates the overwhelming feeling of being sheltered, but fears what will happen if he runs too far. So although he escaped living in the main house with the rest of the family, he is living with his cousin Shigure on Sohma property. And because Kyo isn't directly accepted by the family (something that Kyo resents Yuki for), Yuki harbors jealousy toward Kyo because he stands a real shot at being accepted in the outside world.
Physical activities such as sports, martial arts, and other athletics come very easily to Yuki. Studying and exams are also another one of his strong suits. But put him in the kitchen and he manages to burn a pot of water -- not to mention, he's pretty hopeless about doing other menial chores and can't even tie his tie correctly.
Yuki is the serious member of the family, often becoming exasperated by Shigure's obnoxiousness, Kyo's loud and irritating personality, or Ayame's boisterous affection. While he does house a great deal of patience, it is often taxed by these (and other) members of his family.

[ He seems calm enough when he speaks, tone even and head bowed somewhat. ]
It seems like an awful lot to digest. Our world is destroyed? This is my new home? I'm supposed to assist in rebuilding said destroyed world? And just when I thought my day couldn't get any worse.
[ There's a heavy sigh, and then a forced smile. ]
I suppose that will be something to think about in my own time. More importantly, has anyone seen a girl named Honda Tohru? She's about this tall....
[ He makes a gesture to indicate her height ]
...brunette, likely to be wearing ribbons in her hair? I'm sure you would know her if you saw her. She would probably be having a tea party for all sorts of alien races or inviting the most dangerous of creatures into her room to cook them a meal.
Also? Is... [ tentative pause ] ...there anyone else from my world here currently? Being the only one would be... [ Trailing off thoughtfully ]
3rd person sample:
The more Yuki thought about it, the more depressing it became. Their planet was destroyed. And though this was a heavy thought...though there was much that he missed -- too much to actually think of it all at the moment -- the truth was, there was one sick part of him that was glad. He was glad because it meant he was free. How selfish and horrible was that? He couldn't leave of his own free will, so now that the world was destroyed...he was happy for this newfound freedom? It was an awful thought...one that, no matter how hard he tried to dismiss, it kept creeping up in the back of his mind like a whisper of guilt.
But then he thought of Honda-san. He thought of her smiling face and how he would no longer see her -- unless it was true what they said about wormholes. Yuki thought of this and a guilt tore that happiness right away.
He closed his eyes, laying back on his bed and staring up at the ceiling.
He was grateful to have met her. Without Tohru's existence, he wouldn't be the person he was today. He never would have felt loved, cared for, needed. And these were things that he wouldn't easily forget. They were things that he would carry over with him into this new world.
A sad smile creased the corner of his lips, and before his thoughts and angst consumed him...he decided to go for a walk. It would just be better not to think for a little while.
