Title: One Saved Message
Summary: After a hunting accident puts Sam out of commission for a couple of days, Dean decides to surprise his brother with a new phone, since his old one is toast. Even better is when he finds that he’s been able to save all of Sam’s old information and restore it to his cell. That’s when he discovers an old voicemail

Sam's distress, and Dean's reaction to it, brought tears to my eyes.

I have a problem with the idea that soullessSam bothered to keep that message, but this is so effectively written and gives such a terrific emo moment that I'm not going to quibble. :)

I did think about soulless Sam a lot when I wrote this, trying to wrap my head around whether he would keep it. In the end, it made sense that he would, but not for the same reasons as regular old Sam did. I think that soulless Sam recognized that the message was important to his old self, and that it created a kind of bond with Dean. He said it himself, that things were better with Dean around, even if he couldn't feel the same affection and love that he used to. It would also have been a clue of sorts, yet another Thing About Sam And Dean that he could study and use to make sense of a world that kind of got turned around on him when he wasn't looking.

In short, I'm not sure exactly what his reasons were in all, but it kind of made sense to me in a weird way. :)

Huh. Didn't think about what Soulless Sam woulda done with the message, but I'll buy your reasoning for a nickel. I'm an eldest child myself; I think you caught Dean's vibe, spot on. And Sam? Adorable in his misery. Lovely, sweet little vignette. Enjoyed the heck outta it. :D

Yeah, I was writing along merrily and suddenly thought: "Crap. Why on earth would Robo!Sam keep this when he has no feelings?" And then I remembered that he *did* have feelings, just no empathy or sympathy or compassion. So then figuring out what would motivate him to keep it became a lot easier.
