Over the summer, after listening to some girls in the house (up at Berkeley) plan their dream house, I started thinking about mine. I figured it might be fun to write about it here... maybe starting with the rooms I've already dreamed up and then working my way to the rooms that I have not yet thought about.

So my ideal family, first of all, is a wife and 3 daughters... twins and an older sister.

The first room I thought about is the laundry room. I plan to do all the laundry, at least until the kids are in middle school, but I plan for the kids to put it away as soon they are dressing themselves. For this reason, I plan to have five cubbies with five laundry baskets, as well as a hanging rack, with 5 partitions and plenty of hangers. To save time, I plan to have at least three washers and three dryers. And my ironing board and iron will always be out, as well as a steamer, with a carpeted wall and a hook to hang the clothes to be steamed on. I also plan to have a huge table to fold on, with a chair because sometimes my back hurts when I'm folding. There will also be another big table for things that need to lay flat to dry, as well as another rack for things to hang to dry. And the room will be well ventilated. The original reason was so that I don't get too hot while folding hot laundry and ironing and steaming, but I realized it'll also help clothes that can't go in the dryer dry faster. And last, there will be a big sink with a large counter and a faucet that stretches out so it can reach outside the sink. And on that counter (though not taking up the whole thing) there will be a big bin to do presoaks... and the faucet will stretch to be able to reach that without moving it.

And I think that's about it for the laundry room... there will be a place for soap and dryer sheets, stain removers, etc... but I don't want it to be where all the cleaning supplies are kept. In my house now, the laundry room is not necessarily a clean place... obviously the machines themselves are clean, but if something is gross (muddy or has puppy pee on it, etc), the laundry room is where it goes... I want a separate room for that... my laundry room should be a happy clean place.

I'm also debating whether or not there should be a tv or a stereo system to keep me entertained while I'm folding... still not sure, but I'm leaning towards no... laundry time should be a quite, reminiscing time.

I'm gonna start thinking about other rooms tonight and write about a second room tomorrow. I've already planned out the dance studio, so maybe I'll write about that tomorrow.
