and while i'm playing my violin..

I was really and truly saddened today to hear how many people my age were not voting. many of them told me this sheepishly (i demanded to know where people's "i voted" stickers were if they weren't visible. i told them it was my personal get out the vote campaign) and some were basically like " i just don't fucking care." i have a very, very hard ( Read more... )

"they're asking you to take ten minutes out of your day to help decide the future of the country."

if it was really that simple i'd vote every time. I have no problem taking those 10 min. but its not. If i were to have walked into a booth today (lets not even get into the fact that im not registered in CT, just in NH) I would have basically have been picking at random. Random. cuz I really have NO idea what the issues are. Who the candidates are. What the candidates plans are. All i know is the CRAP thats been inundating my tv shows recently, and honestly, i dont think i trust that very much.

If i were to have voted today, it would have been at random, and I feel that is an incredibly irresponsible thing to do.

What it comes down to is that its not just 10 minutes. Its HOURS of research into each candidate and their history, weeding through countless websites and articles, cuz we all know theres nothing out there thats not swayed one way or the other. This is time that I really dont have, and to be honest, dont have the interest to invest.

If i could find a source of information, a sort of "political cheatsheet", if you will, that I could trust to be completely neutral, listing the pros and cons of each candidate/issue, then sure, i'd be able to make good decisions OF MY OWN MERIT, not swayed by tv adds and other shit. And then I'd vote. Cuz i'd feel like my vote actually MEANT something in that case.

but to vote JUST to vote? Just because you CAN? to me, thats worse than not voting at all.

The resources are out there. You just need to try to find them. Even HOURS, as you say, are worth the consequences.

There is no true neutral "cheatsheet." The pros to you are someone else's cons. It sounds to me like you want the lazy way out. How is that much different than a commercial telling you who to vote for?

dude, i went online and read through everybody's views on the things that are important to me (vote-smart.com and dontvote.com) and decided from that. i spent an hour maybe two over the past week looking at stuff.

also, absentee ballots rawk.

dude, right now whats important to me is hoping i have enough money to pay my rent and feed my dog. I dont follow politics. I dont even watch the news. i wouldnt even know where to start. now that i know there are websites out there, i guess i'll try a bit harder next time... but this time around all the election meant to me was that there were really obnoxious commercials on tv and the radio, talking about things i couldnt care less about.

I cant even find the time to do things i want to do, which makes finding time to look up thinngs that i cant stand damn near impossible.
