This time the 2nd place finisher, a filly. For no apparent reason, she collapses after the finish, is found to have two ankle fractures, and is euthanised. At what point does the horse industry start looking at the risk they're forcing these animals into? I love the Derby. Really I love anything horsey. But after Barbaro's injuries (sustained at the Preakness, not the derby) and death, and Eight Belles now, and a number of other horses suffering fatal accidents on the race track, it begs the question: Are their lives worth our entertainment and financial gain?
