“Just to see you smile
I'd do anything that you wanted me to
When all is said and done
I'd never count the cost
It's worth all that's lost
Just to see you smile”
Ryan throws his keys into his kitchen. He doesn’t even care where they landed. He’s limping ever so slightly. Brian is quietly fallowing him with his hands in his pockets.
“Ryan.” Brian says softly. “Babe, are you all right?” He says louder. Ryan looks at him.
“No. But I’m okay.” Ryan gave him a half smile. Brian just stared at him.
“What’s wrong with your ankle?” He pried. They had stopped walking. They’re standing at the foot of the stairs.
“Nothing.” He said, almost in a whisper.
“Let me carry you.” Ryan doesn’t fight it, he just puts his arms around Brian’s neck. Brian puts his arms under him and lifts him. Ryan’ rests his head on Brian’s shoulder.
Ryan closes his eyes. His thoughts drift to the ice. He can’t hear anything, and all he can see is people skating towards him. And he just wants it all to stop, and he can’t understand why.
“Why’d you stop walking?” Ryan asks, realizing that Brian wasn’t moving.
“Because you are an ass and put mistletoe above you’re bedroom door.” Ryan smiles to himself.
“I forgot.” He said, almost laughing. Brian leans in close. Brian kisses him, lightly, and slowly, like it is the first time he’s ever kissed him. Ryan feels his heart leap a little. No one has ever kissed him the way Brian kisses him.
“I would have kissed you anyways.” Brian says.
“I know. But this way you had to.” Brian carries Ryan to the bed and sets him down lightly. Ryan closes his eyes. He listens to Brian rummaging around.
“Brian,” Brian doesn’t answer, but Ryan continues. “Do you ever…what if we…do you realize-“
“Ryan, spit it out.” Ryan sits up and opens his eyes.
“What if the Sabres never traded Stu Barnes. And they never got the draft pick that I was. What if we were never on the same team?” It goes quiet. Brian stares at him.
“I never thought of it.”
“Would we have loved someone else?” They are staring at each other from across the room. Brian’s shirt is half off, and he has no idea what to say. Ryan just sighs and rolls over on his side.
Brian finishes getting changed. He goes to the bathroom and brushes his teeth. He gets back to the bedroom. Ryan’s eyes are closed, but Brian knows he isn’t asleep. Brian gets up on the bed. He lies behind Ryan, and puts his chin on Ryan’s shoulder.
“I could never love anyone the way I love you. Even if we never met.” Ryan just smiles. Neither says anything, because they don’t really have to.
The last thing Brian sees as he’s falling asleep is the mistletoe hanging in the doorway. He almost can’t wait until the next morning.

Max was in love with both of them. He could not help it. They were both so friendly to him. They spoke to him like he was a normal person, even though he could hardly understand them.
He could never tell them though. He knew what they had. He could see it. The way the spoke to each other, and the way the smiled and spoke to each other. He watched them laugh and glance at each other. Max could see it. He knew what was going on. He knew because he wanted it. He wanted to have that with them.
He wanted to tell them. But he couldn’t. He couldn’t find the words.
He watches them. The way they act, speak, laugh, and skate. They are in love. They talk to Max. They trust Max. It almost, just about kills him. He can’t say anything. He doesn’t know what or how to say it.
One pulls him away. He confesses he is in love with the other. He wanted to tell Max. Max only knows how to smile. He asks Max if he wants to know how they got together. Max only knows how to shrug. He smiles, and tells Max ‘We both had a crush on you!’ He smiles and hits Max’s shoulder playfully. Max only knows how to blink.

You wake up, but don’t open your eyes. Your head is in that spot, that place between Danny’s shoulder and neck. You can’t remember how it got like this. Your history is incredible. You’ve been best friends. You’ve been close. You’ve been punched. You’ve been in love. You were lovers. You’ve been heart broke, and the heart breaker. You watched his relationship with Gaustad. You saw the awkward break up. You moved on. You forgot. You hated each other. You fought. You stopped talking completely.
Somehow, you ended up back on his couch.
You hear Danny flipping through the channels. He pauses on a “Girls Gone Wild” commercial. You wonder where you stand. You always wonder where you stand. Danny keeps flipping.
You feel his hand slide into yours. Every time he touches you, you feel it in your chest. You almost explode.
Danny stops on Animal Planet. You pretend to stir. His hand flies out of yours. You stretch and look up at him.
“Sorry.” You say quietly, even though you don’t mean it. Because you aren’t sorry you fell asleep on him.
“Me too.” He barley says. It’s quiet for a long time. The only sound is the TV and your heart beating loudly in your chest.
“Are we really going to do this all again?” You don’t wait for his answer and you kiss him. You grab his face and kiss him. He puts his hands on your shoulders and pulls you close.
You remember the last time you kissed him. When you kissed and fucked with no feeling. When you stopped loving each other. No love, just lies.
“I…” Danny starts but doesn’t finish. He pushes you back down on the couch, so you are on your back. You missed the way his hands felt on your hips. You look at him.
“I’d take it all back if I could.” He says. His cheeks turn pink. You put a hand on his face.
“No you wouldn’t.” You say with a smile. “But thank you for saying that.”
Danny kisses you and it feels like the first time.
You can’t forget it all, but you don’t care anymore. He is all you care about.
