Ryan and Brian didn’t talk to each other for a week after it happened. They interacted. They ate together, they dressed together, they slept together, they watched TV together. They were quiet. Nothing was different, and yet nothing felt the same. Everything felt gone forever.
They touched softly, and they were both still broken.
“I’m glad that damn beard is gone.” Miller said, braving the first words. And Brian stared at him. Miller didn’t look at him, and Brian searched for words. Miller closed his eyes and sighed. Brian held his shoulder.
“That’s a dirty lie and you know it.”

It's dark. Hank has his arms around me. My head is on his shoulder. He's gently tracing circles on my arm with his finger. His eyes are closed. He sighs. I stare at his face. A face that, in my mind, is perfect in every way.
"Toni." He says quietly.
"Hm." I answer. I open my eyes, as he closes his.
"This is perfect. Everything right now is perfect." I smile and nod slowly. "No really Toni." I open my eyes.
"I know." Hank's eyes are wide.
"What we have is special. Let's not tell anyone. This is between us. They don't need to know. Anything." I nod not bothering to tell him I've already told Ryan Miller and he's most likely told Brian. "They're too young. They wouldn't understand us."
"Hank, they aren't that much younger then us. Hecht is our age. Soupy is a year younger then you." I smile.
"I know that." He says quietly. "But they are young in a different way." He pauses. I'm confused but I act like I know exactly what he's talking about.
"All right. Let's not tell anyone." He smiles at me. "This is our time, why should they intrude. They'd only make it something different anyways."
"Promise?" He says not smiling. His face is tired.
"Promise." He leans in and kisses me. He then goes back to closing his eyes, and tracing circles on my arm.

“What’s wrong with you.” Brian asked. Ryan sighed loudly from the passenger seat of Brian’s SUV.
“Nothing.” He said and then paused. “I was just thinking that we don’t have a song.”
“Ah how cute!” Brian smiled.
“Shut up.” Ryan turned to look out the window.
“We do have a song.”
“I said shut up, now.”
“Our song, is watching the Olympics because they didn’t want us to compete.” Ryan rolled his eyes. “Our song is when were playing on the road and were on the phone and you talk real slow, because it’s late and you don’t want to wake up Paestch.” Brian smiled as he turned the steering wheel. Ryan turned and stared at him. “The way you laugh, and how you make me drive you home from games when you have a perfectly good car. Our song is how you know I’m awake before I open my eyes because the way my breathing changes.”
Ryan turned and looked out the window again. He was kind of shocked at the response. He knew all of it was true, and he knew how Brian felt. It was a weird response to a weird question. But really the two were weird anyways.
“When we’re out at the bars,” Ryan pauses. “And we flirt with the girls, but your hand is on my thigh under the table the whole time.”
“See, we don’t need a song. Our song is better then any song I’ve ever heard.” He pulled into Ryan’s drive way.
“Yeah, you’re probably right.”

It’s raining and it’s late. It’s probably three thirty in the morning, but I honestly don’t know the time. Ryan is sitting in front of me, cross legged, on the floor of his porch. It’s raining so hard that you almost have to yell to hear the other talking.
“I’ve never really been in love.” He says. Which I can tell is a lie by his expression and the way he’s talking. “I just never felt strong about anyone.” He runs his fingers through his hair. This is a lie too. He’s probably was badly hurt, and doesn’t want to admit it. He’s embarrassed he let it get that bad.
“You’ve never been in love?” I ask in a sympathetic tone. Ryan looks up at me.
“Well…no. I never have.” He’s lying through his teeth, but at this point I really don’t care. I smile because it’s so obvious. “Until now.” His cheeks are red. He can’t believe he just said it. He’s embarrassed because he doesn’t know what I’ll say. My stomach is in knots.
“Until now?” I ask quietly. How did we get here? I put my hands on his. He twitches because he’s nervous. He nods finally answering. Both of us are scared to say anything. I pick up his hand and gently kiss his fingers. Even if it’s a lie, it’s the best way he could have told me how he feels

We are in his car. Ryan is driving me home, after the loss. He’s barely spoken to me since the “Hard not to be pissed off” speech he gave the reporters. I can tell by the way he’s holding the steering wheel that he has not calmed down yet. He’s still unhappy with the team, with himself, with me.
I sigh loudly. I want to talk to him. I just don’t know what to say. I don’t know how to tell him that I am just as upset as he is.
“I know.” He says quietly, reading my thoughts. I look at him. He stares at the road ahead. He sighs lightly. “I know.” He says again.
I’m not sure he does know.
Does he know that I feel horrible about the way this all started? Does he know that I think this is all my fault? Does he know that I would do anything to change it all? Does he know that I love him and I hate that this is hurting him so much?
“Trust me.” He says stopping at a red light. He grabs my forearm. “I know.”

“It’s freezing.” Ryan said, teeth chattering.
“Well yeah, we are in Buffalo.” Brian said in a sarcastic tone. He was squatting, his toe of his shoes were almost being touched by the waves. Ryan stood behind him. His hands were shoved in his pockets. There was a little tension between them because despite the win the night before, Brian wasn’t 100% sure that the team was back to it’s old self. Ryan knew that he was being self conscious.
“Why are we here?” Ryan moaned. Brian didn’t answer him. He just looked out, across Lake Erie. He sighed and stood up. “It’s cold.” Ryan said quietly.
Brian stood in front of him. He put his hands in Ryan’s pockets. He wrapped his fingers around Ryan’s.
“Why are we here?” Ryan asked again, quieter. His lips were pale, and his ears were pink. Brian kissed him lightly.
“Because it’s only you and me.” Ryan looked at him, before resting his head on Brian’s shoulder. He rubbed Brain’s palm with his thumb.
“Okay.” He sighed. “We can stay.”

Brain is in my bed. He’s in my arms and he is crying. He’s scared, or at least he keeps saying he is. He’s scared of letting everyone down. Scared of telling me down. While he talks I listen, and wipe his tears. I tell him ‘I’m right here.’
His breathing slows down. He’s sweating. He nods and kisses my hand, like he always does. He tells me he’s never been this close to anyone, or anything.
And even though Brian is happy, loud, and crazy all the time, I live for these moments. Because they are our moments and they are real.
