It turns out my initial idea was somewhat overly ambitious. I mean, I really liked that concept (though my mental image was still vague, which always helps to be more fond of the potential art, because you haven't yet failed at the realization) , and I played around with it for a while looking up references and such, but I was getting more and more anxious about the approaching deadline and I wouldn't have been able to finish it in time and do it justice.
So today I decided to switch to another of my recipient's prompts which will allow me to do something simpler. For that I have now finished the rough, preliminary pencils, though I will need to work on the faces still, and add some more detail, but it's progress at least, which is more than I could have said for the days I spent with the previous idea, which mainly consisted of me pondering stuff for AU worldbuilding for the scene and looking at historical pictures, but never getting anywhere. With my second attempt I already have something concrete, and it will be a happy little picture, that I hope I will be realistically able to finish until the Sunday deadline. *crosses fingers*
The minimum word count for fic in the exchange is only 1000 words, so I don't feel that bad to abandon the ambitious idea.
I also still have to decide how I'll solve the anonymity problem with the image hosting. Secret Mutant runs on AO3 this year, so if when (optimism!) I finish, I'll need to embed the picture there but upload it elsewhere, because AO3 still hasn't gotten around to hosting images natively. Both LJ and my webspace would wreck anonymity because they contain my username in the URL. When I asked the mods about this earlier (initially the FAQ didn't address that problem) they recommended imgur, but with that kind of service that doesn't need an account you then also can't control the image afterwards, and I'd like to be able to replace the unsigned with a signed version once the anon period is over. As last resort I can mail the picture to the mods and they upload it to the mods' scrapbook, and then email the URL back, but I'm not sure how long before the deadline I'd need to do that.
