Hm, this was a nice enough read, otherwise I wouldn't have stayed up to 3 a.m. to finish it, but I found it a bit disappointing that so much of the interesting things are only told about in letters. I realize that the series sticks with Laurence and Temeraire, but still. The things happening elsewhere seemed much more tantalizing than their journey across Australia. And we didn't even meet any Australian characters except as background.
I guess we'll catch up with the other events eventually, since it's unlikely that the next book will be about their quiet Australian cattle farming or the like, but it was not very satisfying, also because I didn't care much about Caesar or Rankin. I think I would have actually liked to find out more about how they settled with each other, but with the outsider perspective on them they were rather opaque.
