And it did take Bilbo 10 years so I think he shares some of your romanticism. Personally I don't think he stopped loving Thorin at all, but his heart is large enough to love more than one person at once and I think if the one who died truly loved you they would want you to be happy more than they'd want you to pine over them for the rest of your love.

Thinking that Bilbo'll never love any but his uncle, and still offering to marry him, knowing that he himself will never love anyone but Bilbo as well.

I think in my head every member of the Durins is ridiculously self-sacrificing when in love. That's the only explanation I have for all the fics like this.
