Hey there... so I'm Debb.... and that's the most label I like to put myself under, unfortunately unless you know me, that won't make sense and definitely won't tell you much about me.
So I moved here from St. Louis in August, where I was an Art Teacher at a Boys and Girls Club, for about three years, for two semesters I traveled around the pacific nw and the desert (mostly arizona and southern utah) for school doing environmental studies....
Salt Lake is a shift for me partly because of the lack of diversity, and the overbearing mormon culture.. .but hell, it's nice to walk or look outside and see the mountains every day.
So I go to school in Vermont (for 8 days each semester) where I do independent study on education (deep ecology vs. social ecology) basically I make up my own classes and mail in my work to my professor who acts more as a guide through the educational stuff.
And as for the kids I work with, there's a lot wrong with them... mostly being entitled, spoiled rich kids.... and a lot of them get more solid as they leave... and i'm more there to learn myself than to expect to fix the teenagers.
Anyway, so i like movies, books, and talking about ending civilization (or civilization ending), drinking beers and listening to live music, doing inane art projects and cooking, drinking too much coffee and yoga.... i'm desperately avoiding becoming completely yuppified as i carreen towards 30, mostly by gripping tightly to punk rock roots in the form of dumpster diving, dying my hair, and taking my doodles and transfering them to my body in the form of tatoos.
So yeah, me in a nutshell. :) There you have it. What about you?
Movies... yup, like those. Books, they can be pretty good too. Dig the yoga, but I need to go MORE. I've had a rather... stationary fall/winter/spring, and that's no good. Fixing that up.
Not much of a drinker but do it socially.
Dig the hippies though not one myself. I'm not sure whether Jessica is or not. I'm thinking not because she washes and shaves and that's very much appreciated.
In portland I'd check out the new music, but haven't done much here. Actually, work has fairly decently consumed life. The rest has been soccer and school.
I'm picking up soccer again this summer and woefully out of shape for it. T o the point where I decided that I'm going to diet and lose weight. Doing well so far, but a bit to go to hit my target goal.
I love ORegon and will eventually return. Chess/checkers, and some computer games are pretty cool too although I stay away from the computer games now... mostly.
I enjoyed visiting my friends who were either artists or geeks in portland and hitting up the art galleries.
My brain is fried from staring at a computer and coming up with work processes all day so I'm sure I'm not too coherent.
Anywhoo... that's some of me. More in my info page and so on and so forth and blah blah blah.
Glad to hear the kids grow up some when they leave.
Oh yeah, into some anime, mostly animation, buffy, west wing, doctor who, angel, the office, firefly, marvel comic characters (and a friend of mine draws DC. I told him that was good because I don't respect superman or batman, but if he ended up doing the xmen I'd turn into a drooling fan boy), arrested development, Samurai Jack, and... ummm... other stuff.
Currently attempting a porch garden but the weather is too cool for my poor babies.
I think i'm probably too geeky to be yuppy, who knows. Maybe I am yuppy. I shop at IKEA (first time, but needed furniture and I wanted to fit exactly my needs) and I own a Rav 4 (her name is ravioli or ravi for short), and I have a gym membership that I have yet to use since moving to Utah.
Then again I'll lay on my back at the airport while waiting for the plain, I dig the hippies and counter culture girls, I'm not afraid to admit that I've played dnd and probably would still if there were a cool group of people to get together with. I'll also be dressing up as a pirate and flying to portland to meet with 200-300 other pirates and go bar hoping in two weekends.
I also enjoy jumping in mud puddles and pretension annoys me.
I have no idea how long i've gone on in this post, so I shall wrap it up.
