Random Synthetic Nightmare-related crap: Something Old, Something New...

Last week, Fabian decided to post a few more videos from the first time that we played at The National, back in August 2008, which he had edited using the footage from the 4 man camera crew that he requisitioned for that night. Some of you have already seen the video for the song Azi Dahaka (of which a higher-quality version is now located here), taken from the same show.

First up, we have Crawl, which is an older one from the pre-Fabian/pre-me era of the band. Traditionally, this is the song where Pat (the drummer) would climb out from behind his kit and don his keytar, letting the programming do all of the drum work. IMO, it's probably the best (and most melodic) of the old songs, which would be why we occasionally still play it - though this particular performance was actually the last time that we did so. It will probably pop up in setlists again once we teach the new keyboardist how to play the song, keeping Pat behind the drums; I'm not too crazy about playing any of our songs without live drums, as it places far too much faith in the sound-tech to keep the programmed rhythm audible. Oh, and don't ask me what the lyrics mean; the only person who might have any concrete idea is the old vocalist, Yancy. The rest of us know what they are, of course (I had to sing this one when I filled in for a missing Yancy back in 2007), but they're utterly mystifying.

Next, we have Disclosure, which is one of the more RAWK songs off of the new album. The music for this song had mostly been written by the time I had joined the band, though it sat around in creative limbo for a few months before a self-established deadline forced us to wrap it up. My primary contribution was a somewhat funk-inspired riff that shows up in the last fourth of the song, and Fabian topped it off with some lyrics about a primordial god ejaculating forth the universe.
