This isn't how I wanted to end class.

Feb 14, 2006 15:40

In class we get two breaks, from 11:50 to 12 and from 12:50 to 1. Usually all the smokers go outside and stand at the corner, but fortunately they weren't here today. (You'll see why.)They usually stand outside around a big cement block next to the road going down hill.

Right outside our building there was an accident, (And when I say right outside I mean open the door and touch the bumper off a green car. The rest of the green car was intermingled with a red one about a foot from it's bumper.) ((edited for clarity and as additional info became available)) 2/15/2006: Going to class the front has a wood exterior with concrete cinderblocks behind. Two of the cars smashed up the wood siding, taking gouges out and even entire panels, and one car went all the way through so that you can see inside the room while standing outside.

During the second break, (I was inside and didn't actually see it) but a garbage truck came barreling down the road (30mph in a 25 zone) and sideswiped at least four other cars, all parked. One was driven into a telephone pole, and busted it's whole front end in. The telephone pole was *in* the passenger seat. Two got turned on their sides and basically crushed, and one of those (the red car) had one of my classmates in it. He was taken to the hospital, and when they pulled him out of the car I saw him lift his head so he was conscious and not spine broke, but I'm not sure if his legs are broken or not. They looked funny, but they might have just been tied down. (He does have a broken leg and a concussion.) About four feet further on from him was the garbage truck and an upside down SUV next to the concrete block going down the hill next to our building. (There was another car infront of/underneath the garbage truck, that I didn't see.) Where the garbage truck ended, it also took out a fire hydrant.

There were at least 5 police cars, a fire truck, an ambulance and they cordoned off the entire block for *hours*.

The teacher didn't want us using machinery that can go 1800 rpm when we're high on adrenalin so he let us out early. It was probably a smart choice. Fortunately, I was at a good stopping spot. (They also canceled the night class.) I went home and made dinner, then walked over to the lib. Now I just have to remember to go home and put dinner in at 4:30. (I forgot, but dad was late too, so it all worked out.)

News people came, I wonder if you'll see me sticking my head out the door this evening? (There was a really neat little clip on the channel 2 6 o’clock news (it was the lead story) that showed the accident as it was happening from a security cam. The garbage truck was just a blur going down the road, but you could see the cars just *disappear* as it took them out. I’m not the person walking there. I was inside the building. The student was on the two second clip of jeans that got pulled out with Jaws of Life. He has a concussion and broken leg, they said on the news. The person walking wasn't me.)

That's enough excitement for my week.
