I know that contracting anthing through a needle-stick injury is very rare - like 0.3% if you stab yourself with a hollow bore needle filled with blood and the patient has to have a raging viral load. The needle I used had been left at the bedside by another nurse, to use for the final flush of the cannula. It contained saline but was only half full - so it's unknown if it had entered the cannula. The cannulas sometimes have blood back-flowed into their chamber. I remember picking it up and thinking "I really should get another one, but I'm too busy". As I went to inject I snapped the needle (plastic) and cut open my finger with it. I'm a little nervous but I know the patient had previously tested for HBV and HCV. Just have to wait for the HIV test.

I know what you mean.
I get freaked out about needles at the beach and in sandpits. At least at work, I can test the patient for whatever blood bourne nasties. You never know what belonged to who and what who had with abandoned sharps.
