Twitter Question

A lot of you peeps are on Twitter.
I've always wondered this but I can't really find the answer.
My tweets are private. IF I @ someone who doesn't have access to my twitter can they still see that tweet directed to them?
EXAMPLE:
Zoo holds a contest, "First person to @ us wins free tickets!" So I tweet, "@randomzoo I want the free tix!" Now said zoo doesn't have me friended thus can't see my tweets (cause my profile is private)... does that mean I'm S.O.L. on the contest? OR by actually making it @ them they can see it?
I don't want to make my profile public but at the same time I'm sad if it means I miss out on contests or tweeting celebrities (cause I'm a dork).
