Title: Necessary Evil [3/?]
Fandom: X-Men: The Movie
Characters/Pairings: Pyro, Iceman, Aurora, Rogue, Shadowcat, others.
Rating: PG
Genre: AU
Word Count: Hell if I know.
Notes: This is coming along so fast. I spent my weekend writing it. *___* Anyway: AU all the way. What would happen if Magneto had succeeded in killing all the humans on earth? Set after X-2.

John wakes up, blinks at the unfamiliarly familiar ceiling, and bolts upright.

This is, of course, a mistake.

"Careful, Mr. Allerdyce. You have a concussion, two broken ribs, a broken wrist, and a bruised ankle. How is the pain?"

John swears. There is a chuckle in response, and he begins to understand.

"Where'm I?" he asks Dr. McCoy, eyes still squeezed shut against the pain.

"The Xavier Memorial High School for the Gifted - most commonly referred to as the X-Mansion."

--

It was Storm, he learns later. Storm who got the call to deal with Magneto's little spy, and Storm who sent out Rogue and Iceman to find him.

But it is Rogue, not Storm and definitely not Bobby, who is sitting beside him the next time he wakes up.

"Ah oughta kill you right here 'n now, Pyro," she says by way of greeting.

"Yeah. Yeah, you oughta. Go ahead, Marie."

"You ain't got a right to call me that, you bastard," she lashes out, tugging savagely at her gloves, then smoothing them back out. "Not anymore."

"Then kill me for it."

Rogue shoots him a loathing look.

"Much as Ah wanna, Ah'd hate to take the privilege away from Bobby." John pales. "'Sides, Ah don't want none of your thoughts inside my head."

--

The first new visitor he receives is a beautiful dark-haired, blue-eyed girl who reminds John so much of Jean-Paul that it comes as absolutely no surprise to learn she is his twin sister.

"I -- I had meant to come see you after I heard how my brother treated you," she says apologetically in her vague Quebecois accent. "But then you left. And I wanted to say that I am sorry for Jean-Paul's behavior. He is -- ...angry."

"I noticed," John mutters under his breath. Jeanne-Marie smiles.

"You must understand, StJohn. His foster father was killed. And after what happened to our parents and his first foster family, that just about killed him."

"I didn't -- "

"I know. I do. But for him, for my brother, you are the face of Magneto's Young Mutants.

--

Jeanne-Marie reminds John of Wanda in some ways. A puzzle. Kind sometimes, a complete bitch other times. Always trying to get John to understand her twin, loving him fiercely but knowing his faults. And if nothing else, there is the same sharp observation.

"Robert," she says one day, very matter-of-factly, "will break my brother's heart without even knowing it."

John blinks. "You know."

She laughs. "Of course! Who doesn't?"

"Aside from Bobby?" Funny. It's been a while since he's said that name aloud. But Jeanne-Marie doesn't know that. She only smiles softly.

"Yes. Aside from him."

--

"--orm, I know it was a mistake, but I'm not taking it back just because -- "

"Kitty, you just about called him a modern Hitler! Not even just once. This is the second time you've -- "

"Storm -- "

"Kitty, I just -- just don't want him to shut us down, you know he will if -- John! John, you're here. Um, you'll have to excuse us, Kitty. Please sit down, John." Storm smiles encouragingly at him, pointedly ignoring the way Kitty slams the door behind her without even a glance at John.

--

"--the Massachusetts Institute?"

Jeanne-Marie nods. "They left yesterday: Robert, my brother, Shadowcat, and Jubilee. That was it. They were sent by Ms. Munroe to help get it running. The headmistress, Ms. Frost, is a... unique teacher." She gives a grin that is and isn't her at the same time. "Trés sexy."

John snorts and flicks open his lighter. This is the Jeanne-Marie that most reminds him of Wanda.

She watches him for a moment, then says in a different, softer voice: "Perhaps you ought to follow."

John's head snaps up.

"Why?"

A pause. "Because otherwise, he will break your heart without even knowing it."

"You know?"

"I know." A broad grin. "Who doesn't?"

"Aside from Bobby?" John ignores the way something in his voice catches. Jeanne-Marie doesn't; she softens.

"Yes. Yes, aside from him."
