Lost in Translation?

Why do some websites automatically switch to another language, when they detect that you're not located in an English speaking country?

I'm looking at you, imdb and tumblr (but I'm sure there are others).

My browser is set to "english", the language setting on tumblr is set to "english" and yet you obviously don't trust my language skills and display part of the content in German.
(ETA: there's another language setting I hadn't seen before that takes care of that. Of course that only works if you're logged in to tumblr.)
(Also, so far the site is not extremely netbook-friendly. I'm just trying to set up/customize an account there.)

If I wanted to have German content on imdb I'd go to imdb.de. So, why do you still insist on showing me the German version of film titles instead of the original ones, or the German release date first??? This sucks, because I need a lot of extra clicks to get the information that I'm used to getting with one glance. I want the old imdb format back.

I don't get it.

ETA2: If you register with imdb, you can go to "site preferences" and customize stuff like language/country and even go back to the old site design.

rant, computer stuff
