At this point we were approaching the confluence of the two great rivers of Mississippi and Ohio. It was really interesting because the Mississippi was noticeably brown while the Ohio was blue.
Here's a satellite photo of the area. If you zoom out one tick, you can see Cairo IL, which is a really poor town despite all the river traffic. On the south shore of the Mississippi I took a picture of a rock formation and wondered if it was natural or manmade;
this makes me think the latter (those thin little "fingers" jutting out from the shore).
I liked Kentucky immediately more than Arkansas and Missouri. For one thing, it had hills (or at least visible elevation differences). After a few minutes we pulled into beautiful
Columbus-Belmont State Park and had a wonderful lunch. Wonderful in the sense that the scenery and shade from the great cottonwoods was such a relief after miles of agricultural fields; the food itself was nothing exceptional. After I ate and played on the swingset a bit I ran around taking pictures of the various large pieces of Civil War history. After about an hour and a half we all piled back on the bus and headed for Hickman, KY.
