Lately I've been trying to learn to sometimes simply swing the thing without letting it touch the ground, and walk a little more normally. This happens when I'm already walking at a quick pace, and on my usual way to the sandwich shop. (I've noticed that my pace wants to be quicker now that it's a little bit colder.) It doesn't really work very well, because the moment I take my attention away from that coordinated rhythm (very soon even on such a well-known walk) the cane tip starts to get entangled with my feet.
And as I've been writing, I think I've discovered the solution of a small mystery, the origin of a bruising on my right ankle just above my foot. It's not particularly sensitive, and I can't think that the cane tip contacts it hard enough to make a bruise. But the two things (I think now) may be connected.
