http://rasei-chan.tumblr.com/post/52925035189 Since Madao lost his cushy job as a government official, he hasn't celebrated his birthday at all. After all when you live in boxes and eat from trashcans, you don't celebrate birthdays. Before he lost his job, his wife would bake him a small cake and they would 'play games' for the whole night. Of course, afterwards he barely ever saw her.
It was no surprise when he forgot his birthday. To him it was another day of living on the streets, looking for a job. He was thrown out of the homeless village after a certain mess. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw the person that keeps ruining his life.
"Yoh, Madao."
"... I don't want to talk to you."
Gintoki rubbed the back of his head, then sighed. He looked right then left, then let out another sigh.
"Hasegawa, I'm here for a job," he finally said. Madao raised an eyebrow looking at the natural silver perm. The only time Gintoki calls him by name, something serious is going on.
"I'm not interested in helping you," said Madao, still feeling slightly annoyed at his friend. He turned his back to Gintoki, maybe he could find some food at that new dumpling place.
"Thank you, Sakata-san," said a calm voice that Taizou would always know. He stopped walking to turn to look at Hatsu. Hatsu hadn't changed much in their time apart, and seeing her sent a thrill down his spine.
"Hatsu," he managed to whisper.
"Taizou," she replied back. She walked all the rest of the way to him, then stopped. Almost hesitating to get nearer to him. In the end, he gave into the feeling he been holding back. She accepted his hug with ease, ignoring the smell of the streets hanging around him.
"Bye." Taizou didn't look at the natural perm that slowly slipped away with a slight, crooked smile on his face. Instead, he paid attention to the woman in his arms.
"Hatsu. I ..." She broke out of his arms, and put one finger to his lip.
"Taizou, I bought you a present," she said, then kissed his cheek. She handed him a basket. He slowly opened it, looking at his wife. Branding her image into his head. Finally, he looked down into the basket.
"A cake..."
"Happy birthday, Taizou. May this next year be better than the last."
He looked up into Hatsu's eyes, which were slightly watery.
"I forgot that was today. Do you want to eat it together?" he asked. His wife just smiled at him, then turned away.
"Maybe after you find a job. I still love you, Taizou. I will always love you," she said. Before he could respond, she ran off.
"I love you too, Hatsu. I will always be yours," he whispered when she was out of sight.
