So I wrote this drabble as I talked with someone about the reveal like the day before this fest was launched (great minds!). It's really short, so it could also be taken as a prompt, if someone wants to build on it. (Maybe give it a happy ending? It is a sad panda drabble.)
Arthur stares at Merlin for a full minute after he lowers his hand and the flames he was holding are extinguished.
Merlin stares back, unyielding but not pushing either, because he knows Arthur well enough to let him have control here.
The disbelief has disappeared from Arthur's face, leaving only the angry set of his mouth. He stalks toward Merlin, who holds his ground and never looks away.
Arthur hauls back and punches him straight across the jaw.
The crack is a sound Merlin will never forget, along with Arthur's anguished yell that has birds scattering into the sky.
Eep. Thank god for that cupcake, because I'm pretty sure that drabble broke my heart! (But then, of course, once Arthur has gotten over the immediate shock of the moment and gotten it out of his system, he comes to his senses and forgives Merlin, right? RIGHT?)
I do imagine it has a happy ending. Arthur just needed to have a chance to react. Once Arthur sobers up a little, so to speak, he'll forgive Merlin and feel badly that he hurt Merlin, although he won't ever be able to imagine reacting any differently.
Yes, I do imagine that almost immediately, Arthur will sober up a little and be sorry that he let himself get out of control and hurt Merlin (possibly he will compare himself to his father?). Thank you so much!
I wouldn't either. Obviously nobody wants Merlin to get hurt, but boys punch their best friends all the time when they get angry. I don't think he'd beat Merlin up or anything, because after one punch I think his anger would be all bled out.

I'm sorry, please have this cupcake:
