“Yunho, why?” he asked desperately, staring at the younger male with pleading eyes.

“Because… I still have a dream to fulfill here, Jaejoong.” The almond-eyed man looked at his former classmate with solemn eyes, in which Jaejoong could see only one emotion: remorse.

“Are you kidding? With the way they’ve been treating us, you want to stay? Yunho, please. Come with us.” Jaejoong’s eyebrows were scrunched up and his lips were just slightly parted.

Yunho never could refuse that face. But he had to this time. “I’m sorry, Jaejoong. Changmin-ah and I still want to go here.”

Jaejoong gazed into Yunho’s eyes a little longer before looking down and sighing in defeat. “Fine, Yunho. Do what you want.” He looked back up at the taller man with disappointment and betrayal in his eyes. “Junsu, Yoochun-ah, and I will be fine without you and this stupid university.” Tears stung his eyes and he tried to blink them away, but they persisted and he averted his gaze back to the floor to let the tears come as they please.

“Jaejoong, I-” Yunho choked on his words. He knew the older male was crying and he knew it was partly his fault. Taking a deep breath in, Yunho tried his voice again. “I’m not staying to spite you for the expulsion. And neither is Changmin-ah.”

“I’m not worried about Changmin-ah!” Jaejoong erupted, shooting his head back up to show his tear-stained face and the deep frown his eyebrows had formed. “He can take care of himself.”

“What, I can’t?” Yunho argued back, offended.

“You’ve always needed me as much as I need you! God, Yunho... You don’t know how much I love you!” Jaejoong kept his expression firmly on his face. He actually didn’t mean to confess right then, but what was done was done and he didn’t feel the need to get embarrassed about it… not in this situation.

Yunho, on the other hand, was stunned into silence and it took a couple minutes for the shock to wear off. He decided to pretend that Jaejoong hadn’t expressed his hidden feelings for him. “Well, maybe I’ve grown up; just like Changmin-ah has.” He kept his expression serious.

The tears started flowing faster, but Jaejoong hardly noticed the added speed and moisture. “Then I hope you’re happy staying here. You won’t be hearing from me from now on.” With that, Kim Jaejoong wiped what he could of the tears and walked away from Jung Yunho.

* * * * *

One week later, Yunho sat on his bed feeling depressed. He wasn’t exactly sure why he was so down, but he knew one thing: he couldn’t stop thinking about Jaejoong.

It’s been one week
Since you looked at me
Cocked your head to the side
And said “I’m angry!”
Five days since you laughed at me
Saying, “Get that together and come back to see me.”

How was he ever supposed to feel the same again? He pretty much lost his best friend; the only person he felt completely at ease around. The last thing he said… “Then I hope you’re happy staying here. You won’t be hearing from me from now on.” How could he be happy when his best friend said something like that? How could anyone be happy when someone says something like that to someone they used to care about?

I realized it’s all my fault
But couldn’t tell you

What was he supposed to do? What was he going to do… now that Jaejoong wasn’t in his life anymore? The smaller male had been right. He did need Jaejoong as much as he needed him. Yunho quirked a small smile at that thought.
Trying hard to smile
Though I feel bad

Changmin came into the room and saw a tear rolling down the older man’s cheek. “Hyung?” he called.

Yunho looked up at him. “Changmin-ah. What’s up?” He tried to hide his melancholy inconspicuously, but his heart wouldn’t let him.

“I should be the one asking you that. Why are you crying?” Changmin stepped further into the room.

“Huh? I’m not crying,” Yunho said, confused.

“Then is the roof leaking water on your face?” the magnae inquired sarcastically and folded his arms across his chest.

Yunho glanced up at the ceiling- quickly looking down afterwards- and touched his cheeks to feel the salty wetness. He hastily wiped the tears away and looked back at Changmin. “I’m fine,” he assured, trying to sound believable. Of course, the younger boy didn’t buy it.

“Yeah, I always cry when I’m fine,” he retorted and rolled his eyes. “Are you still thinking about Jaejoong-hyung?”

“Why do you still call him ‘hyung’? He’s not with us anymore,” Yunho snapped.

“You don’t have to make it sound like he’s dead. He’s still my hyung; whether you like it or not,” Changmin argued.

Yunho sighed. “Why do you have to remind me of him? I was doing just-”

“Don’t even finish that sentence,” the taller boy interrupted. “You and I both know you’ve been thinking about him constantly and that you cry yourself to sleep over him.”

This broke the older male. “I miss him so much!” he sobbed and jumped off the bed to his knees in front of Changmin, throwing his arms around the younger boy’s waist and crying into his hip. “I-” he hiccupped. “I love him!” He wept into Changmin’s clothes while the latter patted his head comfortingly.

*MEANWHILE*

At this time, Jaejoong was sitting on the couch in his apartment… where he lived alone. Yoochun and Junsu had asked him to move in with them, but he declined the offer. He’d only been living by himself for a week and he was already feeling so lonely. Maybe he should’ve taken his dongsaengs’ invitation. It wasn’t too late… they had told him he could always move in if he changed his mind.

No, he couldn’t impose on them. Besides, it would only remind him of the ‘good old days’. And he knew he couldn’t handle that. But… he did feel very lonely. Maybe if he at least paid them a visit. Yeah. That sounded like a good idea. So he got up and headed for the door.

On the way to Junsu and Yoochun’s apartment, Jaejoong started thinking about all those good times he had with everyone and remembered everything he said to Yunho just a week ago. Suddenly, he started crying. The sweet memories felt like horrible memories and it only caused him pain to think about. He really couldn’t live without Yunho, could he?

Thinking that he was crying because he was about to go where all these memories lingered, he turned around and began running back home. He couldn’t do it. He didn’t want to remember anymore. He just wanted to forget.

Rain sprinkled from the clouds and soon turned into a downpour. Jaejoong stopped and looked up at the sky. The rain fell on his face and blurred his vision, but affectively hid his tears. Without thinking, he turned back around and sprinted towards Junsu and Yoochun’s apartment for shelter.

He was torn. Yunho… the one he loved so dearly… didn’t leave with him. Junsu and Yoochun… two very good friends… invited him to move in with them… and he’d declined… only because he was afraid of remembering everything. He loved being with them. He loved being part of that fun group consisting of nothing but those four and himself. He missed Changmin’s cheekiness. He missed hearing Yunho’s random babbling about whatever crazy things his brain came up with. He missed it all.

The tears poured harder and faster than the rain as he made his way through the streets. No one was around. No cars… no people… nothing. He felt alone in the world. The rain… He felt sadness; so much sadness. Being alone… feeling sad… having no one to comfort him… Was this what it was like to be depressed? Had he really already reached that illness? It’s only been a week for crying out loud! He felt like he could cry out loud.

Jaejoong arrived at his friends’ apartment and stood outside the door to catch his breath. He leaned against the wall and tried to control his tears, but they only doubled. He really hated this. This feeling…

As he sobbed, the door opened and he heard a familiar deep voice. “Hyung?”

Peeking at the younger male, Jaejoong broke down completely and threw himself into Yoochun’s arms. “Yoochun-ah!” he wailed.

“What is it?” another voice called from somewhere in the apartment. This time it was a high pitch.

“It’s Jaejoong-hyung!” Yoochun answered as he pulled the latter inside and shut the door.

“Oh, Jaejoong-hung is here?” Junsu asked excitedly as he came bounding into the room. He stopped dead when he saw Jaejoong weeping into Yoochun’s shirt and concern overtook him. “What happened?” He walked closer as Jaejoong looked up and pulled him into the hug as well.

“I’m not sure. I heard strange sounds coming from outside and opened the door to see him crying and he just embraced me,” Yoochun explained. He looked down at the older male. “Hyung, what’s wrong? You’re soaking wet.”

Jaejoong didn’t respond. He just kept weeping, letting the sobs shake his body.

“Let’s get him dry before we make him tell us anything,” Junsu suggested. He also looked at the older male. “Jaejoong-hyung, YooSu will take care of you. Okay? You’re in good hands.”

So-called ‘YooSu’ dragged Jaejoong to the bathroom where they dried him off and changed his clothes. After about fifteen minutes, they had gotten Jaejoong back in the living room and on the couch, where he stayed. He’d stopped crying when they finished drying him off and he now had a blank expression on his face.

Yoochun and Junsu exchanged worried glances and looked back at their hyung. “Hyung, would you like something to eat?” they asked.

No answer.

“Any water?”

Nothing.

“How about some soju?” Junsu asked lightly to brighten the mood.

“Junsu,” Yoochun warned, shaking his head.

“What?”

“You have good intentions, but now really isn’t the time,” the older male explained.

Junsu sighed and hung his head. He put his hands on his hips and shook his head hopelessly. “I don’t know what to do,” he whispered irately, shrugging his shoulders.

“I don’t either. But the best we can do for Jaejoong-hyung right now is be here for him.”

“You’re right.”

*LATER*

Minutes passed and Jaejoong still wouldn’t say anything. An hour rolled by and Junsu and Yoochun were still waiting patiently for Jaejoong to snap out of it. He just kept staring into space; not seeing anything, not hearing anything, not feeling anything. Two more hours passed and Jaejoong finally fell over on his side. Yoochun and Junsu- who were almost asleep by this point- woke up when they heard the shuffling of clothes against leather. They looked at Jaejoong and saw his eyes had closed at some point, and now he was asleep.

“Yoochun, maybe we should move him into the bedroom,” Junsu suggested, a worry line etching across his forehead.

“Yeah. Help me pick him up.”

They lifted the limp body off the couch and carried him to their shared bedroom and laid him down on Junsu’s bed, not forgetting to cover him up. When that was done, they went to the kitchen and made lunch. It wasn’t anything like Jaejoong would have made for them, but at least it was edible. Soon, they were back in the living room contemplating on what they should do with their broken hyung.

“Should we call Yunho-hyung?” Junsu asked. “He’ll know what to do. Actually, all he really has to do is show up and Jaejoong-hyung will be okay, right?”

“No. Jaejoong-hyung said he wouldn’t talk to him anymore,” Yoochun answered firmly.

“But-”

“Junsu-ah, leave it alone.”

“But it’s been a whole week since he said that, so he might’ve changed his mind by now. And besides! Maybe he never meant what he said… kind of like a lost-in-the-moment kind of thing. I don’t think he’s angry at Yunho-hyung anymore, but probably definitely sad…” Junsu rambled, trying hard to make the older male reconsider. He turned to face him in desperation. “Can we just try?”

Yoochun sighed exasperatedly. “I just don’t think it’s a good idea. What if he comes and Hyung is still angry at him? Then he’d tell him to get out and everything will erupt into one huge disaster, and then Jaejoong-hyung will be angry at us for making him come here and leave to be depressed all over again. I don’t want that to happen. All he needs right now is for us to be here for him. No Yunho-hyung, no added help… just us. That’s obviously why he came to us instead of calling Yunho-hyung to work things out.”

“I hate it when you make sense,” Junsu pouted, folding his arms over his chest and slumping in his spot on the couch.

A chuckle came from his left where Yoochun was sitting. “Let’s just make something for him to eat later. I’m sure he’ll be hungry.”

“Okay.”

They went to the kitchen and found Jaejoong already helping himself to the fridge. He noticed his friends in the entrance and instantly looked a little guilty. “I hope you guys don’t mind… I woke up because I started getting hungry.”

“No, we don’t mind. We were actually coming to fix you something anyway,” Junsu explained, smiling encouragingly.

Jaejoong smiled back weakly. “I heard you two talking in there,” he muttered, looking down and closing the door to the refrigerator and making his way to the counter to make himself a sandwich.

“You did?” Yoochun inquired nervously.

“I didn’t hear all of it…” Jaejoong trailed off and stopped what he was doing to turn around. “You… You’re not… going to call him, are you?” he questioned hesitantly.

Both boys looked at each other, and then looked back at their hyung. “No,” they replied in unison.

“Good,” Jaejoong said in a hoarse voice. All the crying he’d done a few hours before had caused his throat to go dry.

“Hyung, do you want some water?” Junsu asked worriedly. He took a step closer to Jaejoong.

“Yeah, thanks.”

Junsu got a water bottle out of the fridge, twisted off the cap, and handed the bottle to the older male. “Here you go.”

“Thanks, Junsu-ah.” Jaejoong took the water bottle and gulped down about half the bottle before taking the cap from Junsu and screwing it back in its place. “That’s better,” he breathed, feeling refreshed. He set the bottle on the counter.

“Jaejoong-hyung, why don’t you move in with us, huh?” Yoochun offered. His eyebrows were scrunched up, creating a worry line in his forehead. “Please. Then we can all be together and not have to worry about anything.”

“No. I’m fine by myself. I just haven’t gotten used to it.”

“But Jaejoong-hyung-” Junsu started.

“I said no,” Jaejoong argued hotly. He went back to work on his sandwich, dismissing the conversation of him moving in with them.

The other two left the kitchen to return to the living room. “Why does he have to be so stubborn?” Yoochun asked to no one in particular.

“It makes me wonder how Yunho-hyung managed to put up with him so long,” Junsu continued and Yoochun nodded in agreement.

They kept their voices low so as not to let Jaejoong hear what they were talking about. At some point sooner or later, Jaejoong would take their invitation to move in.
