Anti-OTP: Gabrielle/Zara

May 19, 2008 21:57

Gabrielle is feeling bored, and perhaps a little lonely, so she fills a basket with a pot of chocolate and some good bread baked by Miz Deliverance. She puts on one of the dresses Zara made her, and with her basket and a bag of her fanmaking things, makes her way through the woods to the dressmaker's door. She knocks.

She lucks out, in that Zara is actually there; Zara spends far more of her time underground these days. But by chance she's there, and she gets up and opens the door for Gabrielle, peering out.

"I've come to impose on you," says Gabrielle, with a smile. "I hope you don't mind." And she offers her basket.

She raises her eyebrows, but steps away from the door. "Come in, then."

"It's been dull," she explains, entering and looking for a place to set her basket. "I thought it might be nice to -- well, to speak with someone else who makes things."

"I brought something, actually, in the basket there -- chocolate. I wasn't certain if you'd like it, but then, I think most who don't have got to be mad."

"Chocolate?" is a luxury Zara has never had in her life. Rich people have chocolate.

"Have you never tried it before?" Gabrielle hadn't either, until perhaps age fourteen. She knows what it is to be poor. "You must, then. It won't be easy to find, soon enough."

"Why's that?"

"The -- closet, back in the Mansion. Where people go to get things. It doesn't work anymore. I don't know where else to find it, here."

"Stopped working?" She frowns thoughtfully. "They'll be running out of food."

"The thought has crossed my mind," says Gabrielle. "We've so many of us become reliant -- there's nothing like a real market, or currency, and not many people with gardens."

"No, there ent."

A sigh. "I suppose we'll make do. Or we won't. Either way, there's no point fussing about it without doing something about it. -- Where might I find cups?"

"Cabinet," pointing. "Suppose after a bit they'll all start killing each other off for food and I'll stay here."

Gabrielle takes two cups from the cabinet and pours the chocolate into them, then offers one to Zara. "I should hope it wouldn't come to that. But then, people are people, and they'll harm each other any way they can, won't they?"
