Hogwarts, 1972

Amos frowned and wiped the sweat off his forehead as he studied the pottery before him, wondering how he was ever going to finish replanting the Venomous Tentacula without being attacked by its many long, twisting vines. Beside him, Georgiana Clarke began giggling like mad, and he shot her an odd look. "What?"

She pointed at him. "You've smeared dirt all over your forehead."

Amos frowned and looked down at his hands, which were covered in soil, and then gingerly touched his forehead again. He wanted to be angry, but Georgiana was laughing so hard that he couldn't help but laugh with her. He realized suddenly that she was quite pretty when she laughed, and it startled him. He liked the thought.

Amos and Miles Corner were laughing over a Potions mishap when Georgiana showed up, sitting between them and passing Amos a butterbeer. "It's not really all that funny," she said, though she was grinning. "You could have been seriously hurt."

"Oh, you're only upset because Slughorn never laughs at your failures," said Miles with a wink. He looked from Amos to Georgiana and off into the distance, then quickly jumped out of his seat. "Oi, there goes Vela Lambent; I think I've actually got a chance with her this time, mates, she's finally dumped that Gryffindor sod. Wish me luck, eh?" He was gone before they could respond.

Georgiana coughed delicately and looked away from Amos, her eyes scanning the room. "So, how are you?" She asked casually - too casually.

Amos frowned at her and sipped his drink. "I'm well. How do you mean?"

She looked at him with a crooked frown, with raised eyebrows. "I think you know how I mean."

Amos hesitated only a moment before placing his hand over her own; her skin was soft and warm. "I am well. Honestly."

She smiled at him, and his heart swelled.

He kissed her gently, clasping her hands tightly in his own. There was a lump in his throat, and he could feel his limbs trembling, but Georgiana smiled against his lips and he laughed, nervously, breaking the kiss and looking at her, seeing the warmth and affection in her bright green eyes, so entirely different from the cold arrogance of grey which still haunted his dreams from time to time.

He wasn't used to being in charge of things, but Georgiana seemed to know this, for it was she to make the first move, she to throw her arms around him and kiss him again. Amos smiled and kissed her back. Georgiana always made him smile; she was lovely and fun, and she made him happy. He wasn't used to being happy, completely happy, but he liked it.

London, 1982

Amos stared at himself in the mirror, leaning in closely to inspect his face. There were dark circles under his eyes, and the very faint beginnings of frown lines creasing his cheeks. He didn't recognize himself.

"Are you coming, Amos?" Lucius spoke in his usual drawl, leaning casually in the door frame with a smirk on his face.

Amos looked at him, feeling his heart begin to race, as it always did whenever Lucius was near. "I can't do this anymore," he said, his voice raspy.

Lucius just kept smirking at him. "You never do tire of saying impossible things, do you? Now, come along, or we'll be late. Must not keep the wives waiting."

"How can you talk of them so confidently? They are more than just accessories, you know." Impossible things; everything with Lucius was impossible, everything about him. He was so horrifically beautiful.

"Oh, do you love your little What's-Her-Name?" Lucius laughed at him.

"I do." Affection for Georgiana bubbled up within him; Amos could see her smiling at him, could almost feel her arms encircling him, her soft lips upon his own. "Of course I do."

"And yet," said Lucius, and he didn't have to finish, for Amos was well aware of everything he meant.

"Yet," echoed Amos, moving away from the mirror, from the harsh reality of his current life. How could he feel so many conflicting things? Moving from one extreme to another, his sweet affection for Georgiana Diggory crashing against the hate and the passion he felt for Lucius Malfoy.

"And yet," said Lucius again, placing his hands on Amos's shoulders, "I don't really seem to care, do I?" He laughed again, and pressed his lips to Amos's own, claiming him as his own yet again.

Amos wasn't used to being happy, completely happy. He hadn't felt that way in the very long time. Somehow, this mix of misery and pleasure always seemed to draw him in, to ensnare him in its whirling madness. Despite everything, he liked it.
