It would be an understatement to say Bryce was excited. She was practically jumping through the roof, and when her very annoyed friends asked her why she was so happy, she lied. She said she was finally hanging out with Audrey, but that was hardly the case. The brunette felt awful lying to her friends, but what could she have said? “Oh, I’m just hanging out with Janelle’s English teacher, James.”
They wouldn’t understand that they were friends before having the board of education put restrictions on their relationship, and for that reason alone, she felt compelled to lie.
After asking countless New Yorkers for directions, Bryce finally made it to James’ apartment. Straining her neck, she glanced at the building. Her hand, buried in her shoulder bag, she blindly felt around for her phone. Maybe she was early? What if he wasn’t even home yet? She had jumped onto the train right after school, so the chances of her being early were incredibly high.
Glancing at her phone, she found James’ numbers, and held her phone to her ear. Unfortunately, she caught his voicemail. "Hey, you've reached J's voicemail. I'm either not in earshot of my phone, am busy rocking out too hard, or am screening my calls and you didn't make the cut. Leave a message and I'll get back to you, provided you're still on the in.”
A smile formed on her lips, as she turned on her heels, aimlessly watching people hurry through the streets. “Hey James, it’s Bryce. Let’s hope you’re not screening my call, or I’ll probably cry, because I’m outside what I think is your building.“ She explained squinting as she read the street address. She was almost positive it was James’ apartment. Still dressed in her uniform, Bryce began to pace to help calm her nerves, although she convinced herself she was only doing it because it killed time. “I’ll see you in a bit. Bye.”
Closing her phone, she held it to her chest for a moment, before placing it into her pocket. Just in case James called back, she would have felt it vibrate, as she waited in the chilly December wind.
