“So what do you think of Mr. Craine?” This was a conversation that was thrown around the small group of friends frequently, because aside from having social contact, it was one of the reasons why they even went to school. Not to learn, but to socialize and pay attention to every word that came out of their attractive teachers mouths.

“He’s good looking, I can’t deny that, but even for a teacher, he has a huge ego.” Brianna explained rolling her doughy brown eyes. Bryce was far too mesmerized with eating her lunch that she didn’t bother to jump into Brianna and Janelle’s conversation. Besides, the last thing she wanted to talk about was her teachers. Her biology unit exam was next period, so a certain English teacher’s incredibly heart stopping smile was the last thing she wanted on her mind. “B, stop that. Why are you glaring at me? Do you like Mr.Craine or something?”

“No,” Her half-hearted glare turned into a full blown Medusa ‘turns-people-into-stone’ glare; however, her new best friends were immune to it’s effects. “I just think there’s better things to talk about.” She murmured, her gaze falling onto James, or Mr.C as everyone called him. He stood near the entrance of the cafeteria holding a plastic container of what appeared to be creaser salad. Forking the lettuce, he abruptly laughed at something another teacher said. Bryce wondered if he even liked supervising the students. It seemed like a terribly boring thing to do.

“Bryce? Hey, Bryce?” Her eyebrows raised in question, Bryce turned her attention back towards Janelle. “Wow, your really out of it.”

“I am not.” She retorted, while the three girls raised to their feet. Janelle was right. Bryce wasn’t at the top of her game. With the wake of Leon’s accident still present in her thoughts, she often felt her mind wander towards him. The young aspiring lawyer was finally awake, yet that didn’t calm the despair and anger in her’s heart. Sure, her sister was closer to him, being best friends and all, but his accident affected Bryce more then she’d like to admit.

Another reason why she came to school everyday: She actually felt appreciated. Unlike at school, she felt like a stanger in a strange land. Her mother rarely spoke to her, and used the excuse of staying with Leon’s mum, Sandra, to her full advantage. David tried to put in an effort to see his daughter, but he work was always separating them. Between work and rehearsal, sisterly time for the Grahams were limited to occasional text messages too.

After testing the water a few times, Bryce found the friends who wouldn’t take her for granted. Janelle with her untamed blond hair, and annoying infatuations with teacher, and insecure, smart Brianna. As she grew closer to the two girls, she felt less and less like a stranger. She felt less lonely.

As the bell rang loudly above them, Janelle glanced upward before smiling, her hand gently caressed Bryce’s elbow, before patting it. “Sweetie, I’ve noticed you haven’t finished your lunch for the last couple of days. If you keep this up your clothes are going to be hula hoops around your ankles. I know you’ve been stressed, but you need to eat.”

The simple gesture of concern warmed Bryce’s heart, and for that, she’d be eating her sandwich on the way to the biology hall. While running the anatomy of a human heart through her head, she tried, and failed, to ignore the innocent crush she had on a certain salad eating teacher.

Maybe doing an exam about a heart was the last thing she wanted to do.
