If Neville Longbottom was the kind of bloke who swore, he'd be doing it now. He simply couldn't manage to get this charm right. He'd even tried with his left hand, since sometimes his right wrist simply couldn't make it into a tight enough or sharp enough movement after having been broken that third time. There had to be a reason he couldn't work the spell. It didn't look all that difficult. He'd certainly worked much harder magic. That was why he couldn't understand what was wrong with him.
It didn't help that his concentration kept slipping away. He'd woken up on several mornings over the past few weeks smelling a hint of jasmine. Neville couldn't remember what he'd been dreaming about on those occasions and they certainly didn't feel like nightmares. Since the dreams faded by the time he stretched and got out of bed, he hadn't given them much thought.
At least he hadn't until now.
This evening, he kept catching a whiff of jasmine and a hint of something else, which continually pulled his concentration away from his practice and revision. Neville thought if he could work out where it was coming from, he could focus. Unfortunately, there were no flowers in the room except for a few things on the Christmas tree and mantle, none of them jasmine. He'd already checked. Twice.
Forcing himself back on task, Neville tried the spell once more. When he failed yet again, he tossed his book on the table in front of the couch where he and Pansy were sitting. "Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you," he leaned his head back against the cushion. He felt like growling. He probably would have, if he'd thought it would help.
