Ten random facts about Cho Chang

Oct 07, 2007 15:03

1. Cho was born in late June but her name means "Autumn" in Cantonese. When she was five, she asked her mother why she was named Autumn; her mother said it was simply because she liked the name. Her middle name means "learning", which is highly esteemed in Chinese culture.

2. When Cho got to Hogwarts, she was the smallest girl in Ravenclaw, if not the entire school. Eventually, when she was 16, she had a growth spurt, which brought her up to 5 feet 2 inches. She has always wished she was taller, but being small and light helped her as a Seeker in Quidditch.

3. Cho has two older brothers, Lee and Lam, who are 9 and 7 years older than her, respectively. She was something of a pleasant surprise to her parents, who hadn't thought they could have any more children. Both of her brothers were in Hufflepuff, so she didn't feel any need to live up to their reputations in her own house. In that respect she felt a bit sorry for Ron and Ginny Weasley, who had to live up to the reputations of their older brothers in Gryffindor.

4. While she was at Hogwarts, Cho spent summer holidays helping in her parents' apothecary. She learned a lot about Chinese herbal medicines and, while she was in NEWT-level potions, taught them to make some of the advanced potions she had learned at school.

5. After she was in the D.A. Cho continued in NEWT-level Defence Against the Dark Arts. She was one of the few Ravenclaw students toward whom Professor Snape wasn't surly. She always suspected it was because she had such a public breakup with Harry Potter, though it could have been because she was deferential toward Snape, which was normal for her given her Chinese upbringing.

6. When Hogwarts was attacked near the end of her seventh year, Cho was revising for her NEWTs and chose to continue revising rather than respond to the call of the Galleons Hermione Granger had given all the D.A. members the previous year. In retrospect, she realised she had resisted doing something she thought would help Hermione, whom she still blamed for her breakup with Harry as well as for the scars on her friend Marietta's face. She felt guilty that perhaps her inaction had contributed to the Death Eaters entering
the school and Dumbledore being killed. She lost all respect for Snape at that moment and pledged to herself that if she had another opportunity to help Harry, she would do so and ignore the fact that she and Hermione don't get along.

7. Cho has been a fan of the Tutshill Tornados since she was 8 years old and her oldest brother, Lee, took her to a Tornados/Wimbourne Wasps match. Lee had just received his Apparition license, and it was the first time he’d ever side-along Apparated anyone. Cho was lucky she lost only two inches off the bottom of her hair.

8. One of Cho’s prized possessions is a scrimshaw pendant her maternal grandfather sent her from China. The pendant piece is ivory with a dragon etched on it, which symbolises good luck in China. She was wearing it when she answered the call of her D.A. Galleon, and now the battle is over, she might never take it off.

9. More than a little vain about her looks, Cho takes scrupulous care of her hair and face and maintains her weight at 105 pounds because she thinks anything heavier will make her look fat. However, she has the nervous habit of chewing her fingernails, so she's never had a manicure.

10. Cho is very protective of and loyal toward her friends. Intellectually, she knew that Marietta Edgecombe had betrayed the D.A., but emotionally she felt the need to play devil's advocate and explain to Harry about Marietta's mother's position in the Ministry. The fact that Harry stood up for his friend, Hermione Granger, was the nail in the coffin for Cho's romance with him. It never occurred to her that it might be hypocritical of her to stand up for her own friends and not expect him to stand up for his.
