Rory & I took the kids to DC for a couple of weeks to visit my parents. Now that we're back, we noticed that we took about 15 photos the entire time we were there (too busy chasing down Gavin/living, I guess). There were a few places I would have liked to take photos. Here are the highlights of the trip:
*All of the road construction. Seriously, Gavin's favorite part of each day was the construction vehicle safari that is Northern VA. We, as drivers, see delay, delay, delay; but Gavin was in heaven watching so many diggers, earth movers, and cranes.
*Visiting a couple of Fairfax County's Parks - namely Green Spring (where Gavin found the puzzles in the staff area of the children's department) and Hidden Oaks (which has lots of reptiles in tanks).
*The Natural History Museum - where Gavin loved... the dioramas! You know, the displays showing ancient sea life next to the big, cool dinosaur bones that everybody ELSE ignores in favor of looking at dinosaur bones... Yeah. Gavin liked the dioramas and couldn't care less about the bones.
*Fireflies.
*Tossing golf balls up into the air at night to watch the bats swoop down for a closer look. (Oh, and a personal highlight for me: I got to see a flying squirrel jump between two of my neighborhood trees one night.)
*Reston Zoo - the zoo where you can hand-feed ostriches, camels, and bison! Gavin enjoyed the tractor ride best of all.
*Cable TV. (Ok, so maybe I enjoyed this a bit more than Gavin did. Most of our days were out and about, so Gavin watched little TV.)
*Fireflies. I name this twice because there were A LOT of them this year (it's been really hot). Gavin enjoyed looking at them - and on the last night, chasing them down all over my parent's yard.
*Visiting a few friends. Also my family, though that goes almost without saying.
Rory & I also got to take home a few souvenirs: Rory picked up his dress blues at less than half price, and I brought home some silk brocade that my parents bought for me during their trip to China. I still haven't decided what to do with it, but one is red with a black dragon motif. The other is deep blue with a white cherry blossom design. They're both gorgeous.
