Okay, the short version? I ordered a set of 3 DIMMs (6GB of triple channel memory in 2GB sticks). One of them is faulty, and I've RMA'ed it with Newegg ( Read more... )

You're operating under the assumption that they might have any of your particular revision on hand. They're operating under the assumption that they won't. They'd rather inconvenience you now than have you screaming at them later when it still doesn't work or you have to wait three times as long and why didn't they just ask you for all three in the first place since you have to send the others now anyway? If I were in charge of the decision on that one, I'd reluctantly agree. I don't like the idea of spreading inconvenience to everyone, but it still beats the massive inconvenience or worse to a few.

The manufacturer should be pretty understanding. Call them, explain that Newegg sat on it and didn't tell you about the full requirement, but don't expect them to authorize a partial, they just won't. It's also possible that they've hardcoded particular sets to only work together in some way. Certainly wouldn't surprise me. In any event, the customer service rep they've had responding to reviews on Newegg has been quite reasonable from what I've seen, and that gives me hope for you on that front.

Like I said, Newegg could have handled it better, but I'll tell you a little story of my own to offer some perspective. I switched main doctors shortly after I got here when I found one that was taking new patients and associated with the Cleveland Clinic as I figured that was my best chance of a diagnosis. I saw the new doc and he said he'd think about who he wanted to refer me to (which specialist, specifically). Two months later I hadn't heard a word. What I should have done was call them once a week to check on it. I didn't, so it hadn't happened. If one of the 10 best hospitals on the PLANET can't manage to remember that I need something from them, I don't know that you've got a better chance from a retailer. Squeaky wheel, etc. It's not pleasant in either case, but it is how the world generally works.
