Small question: If I am unable to find a book through my public library and have to order the book through a book seller (not that it is a problem there) or I can't find it period, do we have the option of not reading the book for whenever the scheduled time period might be for the particular book? Also how long in advance will we get notice of what book we will be reading for the first or second half of the month?

Oh, hi! I am new and just discovered the community a few days ago; was browsing for something else and found this. My name is Melissa and am from what people in the States call the Pacific Northwest and the Seattle region, except I am two and half hours north of Seattle, closer to the host city of the 2010 Olympics. And yes, my favourite TV show is Third Watch.

That's just a suggested time period, but really, take as long as you want. I'm a few months behind myself. If you can't find a book, I'd try www.bookcrossing.com. I get a lot of mine there. It's a free program where you swap books with people.

Usually I'll post a poll for the next 2 books around the last week of the month. Oh and welcome!

Hasn't everyone on the planet read The DaVinci Code at this stage? It's not very good. If you haven't yet read it, wait for the movie - same buzz I'll betcha.

Did you hear the thing about Dan Brown being sued over it too? The guys who wrote holy Blood Holy Grail claim he robbed their idea, but I seem to remember him mentioning them. One of the characters' names is actually an anagram of theirs.

So there.

I thought it was awesome. But it's the first time I'd been exposed to that particular legend, being raised Christian, and I just felt it opened my eyes to a lot of stuff I was in the dark about. Now I'm seeing the programs on the history channel about it and stuff and it's just fascinating to me. But really, I included it because I just finished reading it and I'm so behind in my schoolwork that I haven't been keeping up with the readings. So I thought if other people hadn't read it yet, it's a book I would reccomend and I could actually participate in the discussion this month :)

Isn't that cheating? :P

I wasn't that impressed by the pseudo-high-brow stuff, and some of those 'uncrackable' codes were a bit... well... simple. If you knew anything about Isaac Newton.

There was one of his others which had a mathematical problem which had apparently stumped boffins for years, but which was quite easily solved by anyone who had sat junior certificate maths. That is, the average Irish fifteen-year-old.

I mean, Dan's a grand thriller writer - I read the damn thing in two sittings because I couldn't put it down - but I don't like all this clever-clever stuff, because it isn't. It's basically someone with a hobby telling you about the latest book they read on the subject.

Well, I suppose this could just be copied and pasted into the end-of-month discussion... Saved myself some time!

I hope Player Piano gets picked though, Vonnegut is incredibly good.

I know it's cheating :) dr_manhatten November 30 2005, 01:14:08 UTC
And I do agree with you and I usually don't read books that are #1 bestsellers where every moron is reading them and thinking themselves intellectual. I also think it was written to be made into a movie, as most of that kind of fiction seems to be. There wasn't much character development and it all seemed kind of rushed. A fascinating subject though and that's what kept my interest.

Vonnegut is incredible, but I think we've read 2 of his novels here already. No reason not to read more though. :)
